The Daily Chizzuk of our Rebbe, the Gaon and Tzaddik, Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlit”a – We get married in order to bring the King Messiah
The Rabbis taught: It happened with a certain man, that he married a woman whose hand had been cut off, and he did not notice it until the day of her death (Shabbat 53b).
These are Rav Berland’s holy words:
Freida, the wife of Rav Shmuel Shapira, her face became contorted, she had a scar on her face. Then, as a Litvak [Rav Shmuel Shapira was a Litvak before becoming a Breslover], it didn’t matter to him. Also as a Litvak, you need to guard the eyes.
Rav Shmuel Shapira said, “I will not look. What difference does it make to me – a scar or no scar. A cooked nose, a crooked mouth…”
One [man] married a woman whose hand had been cut off, a story from the Gemara in Tractate Shabbat. In his life, he didn’t see that her hand was cut off. He had a wife whose hand was cut off, and in his life he did not see this. A person does not need to look at his wife for beauty, for desires.
For what do we get married?
The Rebbe says (Likutey Halachot) that we get married in order to bring Mashiach ben David!
If it’s for desires, then you don’t need to get married at all. For the evil inclination? A wife is not for the evil inclination!
“With this [zot = “this” in feminine form] Aharon shall come into the Sanctuary” (Vayikra 16:3). If he doesn’t have a wife, he cannot enter the Holy of Holies. Only through a wife he can – through the wife, we enter the Holy of Holies.
So the Rebbe asked: for what do we get married? It’s it for the evil inclination, it’s better not to get married! What, you marry a woman for the evil inclination? For your desires?
The Rebbe says that for this we don’t get married. To a wedding like this it’s forbidden to go. If a person gets married for the evil inclination, then it’s forbidden to be at this wedding. It’s not fitting to rejoice!
About what are we rejoicing? That you have a wife? About what?
If this is for desires, for the evil inclination… a wife isn’t the evil inclination. A wife is the Divine Presence. This is a Godly soul.
Our body is a container. The body is not for desires.
