Rabbi Eliezer Berland’s Advice on: Shabbos

Continuing our translation of the Etzot HaNachal compendium of advice from Rabbi Eliezer Berland, shlita, based on the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.

Shabbos

  • All Shabbos is just singing and melodies.

The angels sing, the worlds sing. Everything sings and dances.

  • Nothing is raised up without singing.

  • Shabbos is not for the cholent and fish.

If everything is in the spiritual world of ‘atzilut’ [on Shabbos], if the food and the fish, and the meat and the cholent are in ‘atzilut’, so where are you? Lower than the meat and fish?

  • If a person doesn’t have an ice lolly or ice cream on Shabbos, he can’t enjoy the Shabbos?!

He doesn’t enjoy the davening. He enjoys the ice cream more.

  • ‘And the children of Israel guarded the Shabbos for their generations as an eternal covenant, between Me and between the children of Israel…’ [v’shomeru bnei Yisrael…].

The entire Shabbos is a holy covenant.

The entire Shabbos is guarding the covenant. The entire Shabbos was given for the sake of guarding the covenant. Only for this were we given the holy Shabbos, not for nonsense and not for lusts, only for the guarding of the covenant.
