Rav Berland speaks about the way to safeguard youth and children, so that they won’t fall and abandon the way of holiness:
“There are scores of youth going off today, and why are the youth going off?
“Because [people] don’t know how to speak to their hearts!”
One of the listeners asks the Rav: “How do we talk to them?”
The Rav answers: “You need to understand that this was Noach’s mistake, like they say in Sanhedrin, that Noach would sell things hard like tendons. In the Midrash, it’s written that he didn’t rebuke at all, but he did in fact rebuke.
“Noach rebuked his generation that they need to make Melaveh Malkah (the post-Shabbat meal), that in every synagogue they should make Melaveh Malkah. Then all the youth from that neighborhood and street will come.
“You need to make many Melaveh Malka’s. Many prayers with nigunim (melodies). This is what draws the youth, only prayers with nigunim.
“The entire thing is to strengthen the Jews, to radiate light to them, to give them vitality, that everyone should have vitality.
“If you give to a child vitality, he won’t be secular. A child needs vitality. A child needs them to sing songs with him, to tell him stories”
