Real reason a man has debts

Excerpt from a shiur given by Rav Eliezer Berland, shlita, for Parshat Ki Tisa

Esther said: “When am I lost, I am lost” (Megillat Esther, 4:16). It’s written that the Shechina is called ‘Esther’. In every single generation, there is a woman who is the holy Shechina, and she gives voice to the words of the Shechina.

Women should know, that if you see the women making teshuva, then that means that now is the time of the redemption.

It’s like Esther and Mordechai, who spent his whole life going to the courtyard of the womens’ residence, from the seventh year of the King’s rule up to the 12th – five years. And Esther is the holy Shechina, and [Mordechai would go to find out] ‘how’s it going, with the Shechina?’

Every impure emission creates 400 million demons

And so, it’s forbidden for a man to have keri (an impure emission). If a man has keri, then he will be lost. The whole reason why a man has debts is because he’s having keri. Every time a man has keri, he creates another 400 million demons. Every drop of keri is another 400 million demons.

And so,[after this occurs] a person needs to immediately recite the 10 chapters of tehillim[1] (Psalms), to [rescue them] from the klipa (evil husk) that’s taken them…

In every drop of water, there is fire.

The Rambam says water contains the secret of fire. Today, they’ve proven that it’s possible to make fire from water. The energy of fire exists within water. The two names, E-l and Elokim, chessed (kindness) and Gevurah (strict judgment). The man is chessed and the woman is Gevurah, and in the [kabbalistic realm] of keter (crown) this is joined together [lit: composed].

10 different melodies, 10 different languages of geula (redemption).

Moshiach needs to come on the 13th of Adar

And today, it’s the 13th of Adar, tomorrow it’s permitted to eat until ten minutes to five, and now we are going to bring the geula. Because Moshiach needs to come on the 13th of Adar, and this is what Yosef hinted to with the letters on his goblet…that on the 13th of Adar Moshiach ben Yosef needs to be revealed.

For Moshiach is going to subdue the ‘Liliths[2]’, the Liliths will merit to the praises, “Praise Him, in the firmament of His power, Praise Him for His mighty acts, praise Him as befits the abundance of His greatness. Praise Him with the blast of the shofar, praise Him with lyre and harp.” (Tehillim 150).

So, every time a man has keri, he creates another 400 million demons, and all of his debts come from this.

  1. Shalom,

Please forgive me, I am confused. In this article the HaGaon and Holy Tzaddik Morenu HaRav Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlit’a was quoted in this article to say ” on the 13th Moshiach Ben Yosef will be revealed”. Question: Did not an article on this website back on 25 Oct 2017 quote the Rav as saying that HaGaon and Holy Tzaddik ” Rabbi Ovadia Yosef was Moshiach Ben David”? I am a foolish Noahide trying to understand these things. May HaShem Bless You! Shalom.

  2. My sincere apologies, correction, i misquoted, please forgive me. The article above quoted the Rav as saying: “on the 13th of Adar Moshiach ben Yosef needs to be revealed.” I said “will be revealed” I beg your forgiveness. The only thing I can think of is ; Did a new Moshiach ben Yosef come after Rav Ovadia Yosef shlit’a, Beloved and of Blessed Memory? Also was this new Moshiach ben Yosef revealed on 13 Adar?
Thank you and Bless HaShem for taking the time to consider this. Shalom

    • Thanks for your question, Glenn.

There is a potential Moshiach ben Yosef and a Moshiach ben David in each generation. If the soul of the ‘Moshiach ben Yosef’ isn’t actualized in a particular generation and through a particular Tzaddik, it passes on to another Tzaddik. Rav Ovadia, z”tl, had the potential to be actualized as the ‘Moshiach ben Yosef’ of the generation until he passed away. Now, the soul of the Moshiach ben Yosef has passed along to a different Tzaddik, we don’t know who.

The last thing to mention is that Rav Berland, shlita, often talks at an extremely high level that is very difficult to fully grasp and fully understand. While we are translating excerpts of his recent talks on the website, we ourselves don’t always know 100% clearly what the Rav is referring to, or how it will actually be revealed in the world.

The English translation tries to reflect that as much as possible, but it’s a very narrow bridge as English often requires much more precision, whereas the same phrase or word in Hebrew can mean many different things.

  3. So what is the Rav advising for someone to do as a tikkun to rectify and do the correct necessary teshuva for someone to get back out of debt and on their feet,as you wrote I didnt fully grasp everything myself

    • The first advice is to say the Tikkun HaKlali immediately after this occurs, and to go and toivel in a mikvah. This is the advice from Rebbe Nachman himself, see here for more background and explanation: http://opensiddur.org/prayers-for/forgiveness/the-tikkun-haklali-according-to-rebbe-nahman-of-bratslav/

The second piece of advice is to ask Hashem to help with shmirat eynayim etc. Without Hashem’s help, it’s impossible for us to resolve this problem alone. Rav Shalom Arush has suggested that men spend 30 minutes of their hour of daily hitbodedut asking Hashem to help them with shmirat eynayim, which is often the spiritual root of why this problem occurs.
