A Prayer Recited from Rosh Chodesh Elul until After Simchas Torah, in the Morning After Tachanun and Every Evening

(1) Of David. Hashem is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Hashem is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

(2) When evildoers approach me to devour my flesh, my tormentors and my foes against me, it is they who stumble and fall.

(3) Though a camp may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may arise against me, in this I trust.

(4) One thing I have asked of Hashem, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of Hashem all the days of my life, to behold the pleasantness of Hashem and to visit in His Sanctuary.

(5) For He will hide me in His sukkah (shelter) on the day of distress; He will conceal me in the secrecy of His tent; He will lift me up upon a rock.

(6) And now my head will be raised high above my enemies around me, and I will offer in His tent sacrifices of joyful shouting; I will sing and chant praises to Hashem.

(7) Hear, Hashem, my voice when I call; be gracious to me and answer me.

(8) On Your behalf, my heart says, "Seek My face." Your face, Hashem, I will seek.

(9) Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger. You have been my help; do not forsake me and do not abandon me, O God of my salvation.

(10) For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but Hashem will gather me in.

(11) Teach me Your way, Hashem, and lead me on a straight path, because of my watchful enemies.

(12) Do not deliver me to the will of my tormentors, for false witnesses have risen against me, and those who breathe violence.

(13) Had I not believed that I would see the goodness of Hashem in the land of the living!

(14) Hope to Hashem; be strong and let your heart be courageous, and hope to Hashem.
