A Prayer Recited from Rosh Chodesh Elul Until After Simchas Torah—In Shacharis and Minchah After Tachanun

TITLE: A Prayer Recited from Rosh Chodesh Elul Until After Simchas Torah—In Shacharis and Minchah After Tachanun

CONTENT:
(1) Of David: Hashem is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? Hashem is the stronghold of my life—whom shall I dread?

(2) When evildoers draw near against me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and my enemies—it is they who stumble and fall.

(3) If a camp encamps against me, my heart will not fear. If war rises up against me, in this I trust.

(4) One thing I asked of Hashem—this I seek: that I may dwell in the House of Hashem all the days of my life, to behold the sweetness (pleasantness) of Hashem and to visit (to contemplate and seek) His Sanctuary.

(5) For He will hide me in His sukkah (shelter) on a day of evil; He will conceal me in the hidden place of His tent; upon a rock He will lift me up.

(6) And now my head will be raised above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in His tent offerings of joyful shouting; I will sing and I will make music to Hashem.

(7) Hear, Hashem, my voice when I call; be gracious to me and answer me.

(8) Of You my heart has said, “Seek My face.” Your face, Hashem, I seek.

(9) Do not hide Your face from me. Do not turn away Your servant in anger. You have been my help—do not cast me away and do not forsake me, God of my salvation.

(10) For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but Hashem will gather me in.

(11) Teach me, Hashem, Your way, and lead me on a straight path because of those who lie in wait for me.

(12) Do not give me over to the will (the soul/desire) of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and one who breathes violence.

(13) Had I not believed that I would see the goodness of Hashem in the land of the living…

(14) Hope to Hashem; be strong, and He will give courage to your heart; and hope to Hashem.

The Arizal (Rabbi Yitzchak Luria zy"a) writes: Whoever recites Psalm 27 from Rosh Chodesh Elul, evening and morning, each day, is promised that he will have a good year, and that he will be “sweetened” (i.e., experience a pleasant, favorable outcome) in the coming year. And even if a harsh decree is written against him in Heaven, he can annul it. He will remove from upon himself all the accusers (mekatregim—prosecuting angels), and he will nullify from upon himself and upon all the members of his household harsh and evil decrees, and he will emerge meritorious in judgment.
