A Prayer to Merit That All My Sons and Daughters Will Have a Listening Heart and an Attentive Ear, and Will Be G-d-Fearing and Learn Torah with Joy and Understanding, and Will Merit Zeal

Master of the Universe, Almighty, from Whom no plan is withheld—grant me a listening heart and an attentive ear. And may all my sons and daughters, until the end of all generations, be G-d-fearing, engaged in Torah and mitzvos (commandments). May they all learn Torah lishmah (for its own sake), with complete understanding and with a full, burning desire—just as it is said: “Many waters cannot extinguish the love, and rivers cannot sweep it away; if a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned” (Shir HaShirim/Song of Songs 8:7).

And may I merit—together with my sons and daughters, my grandsons and granddaughters, my great-grandsons and great-granddaughters, until the end of all generations—to fulfill the teaching: “Yehudah ben Teima says: Be light as an eagle, swift as a deer, strong as a lion” (Pirkei Avos/Ethics of the Fathers 5:20). [The numbers that appear in the text are gematria (numerical values of the Hebrew words), indicating inner connections: “הֱוֵי קַל 130 כַּנֶּשֶׁר 570 רָץ 290 כַּצְּבִי 122 גִּבּוֹר 211 כַּאֲרִי” 231 = 1559.]

And through this: “Looking through the windows, peering through the lattices” (Shir HaShirim/Song of Songs 2:9) [also with gematria as written: “מַשְׁגִּיחַ 361 מִן 90 הַחֲלּוֹנוֹת 505 מֵצִיץ 230 מִן 90 הַחֲרַכִּים” 283 = 1559]. And through this we will merit salvations (yeshuos), for also: “Because of the fathers who did Your will” [as written with gematria: “בִּגְלַל 65 אֲבוֹת 409 שֶׁעָשׂוּ 676 רְצוֹנֶךָ” 366 = 1559].
