"The voice of joy and salvation in the tents of the tzaddikim." This past Monday night, the 9th of Iyar, the engagement celebration took place for the grandson of our teacher, Rav Eliezer Berland shlit"a—the young scholar Avraham Rubinstein, may he live and be well, son of the son-in-law of the leader, the Chassid R' Natan Rubinstein shlit"a, son of the Mashpia, the Chassid R' Yehoshua Dov Rubinstein shlit"a—to the daughter of the Chassid R' Nachman Goldschmidt shlit"a, one of the prominent members of our community in the city of Beit Shemesh.
The engagement took place at the 'Tov HaChesed' halls in the Rama A neighborhood of Beit Shemesh. At 12:45 AM, our teacher, Rav Eliezer Berland shlit"a, arrived at the celebration, entering to the singing of "For length of days and years of life they will add to you" and "Be happy, be glad," and took his seat of holiness at the table of honor. Immediately after the singing, he began delivering a fiery lesson on the virtue of the groom and bride and the virtue of dancing and melodies. Before you is a short excerpt from the lesson:
"Regarding the engagement, the Chatam Sofer says that the groom is the High Priest, and every blessing that he blesses from Heaven must be agreed to, and it is fulfilled..."
"So, the more a person plays music, the more he sings—Rebbe Nachman says, 'Happy is he who considers the poor'—that only through the melody can he draw down all the wisdom in the world—'And know that through the melody, he awakens all the souls...'"
For an hour, our teacher, Rav Berland shlit"a, influenced us with his words that cut like flames of fire. After an hour, he began singing "Be happy, be glad, beloved friends, as You made Your creation happy in the Garden of Eden of old"—our teacher, the Rav shlit"a, sang for about an hour and a quarter! Together with the entire crowd that came to participate in the joy of the house of the tzaddikim. During the singing, our teacher, Rav Eliezer Berland shlit"a, wrote the engagement contract and instructed his grandson, the groom, to perform the acquisition (kinyan) using the shtreimel of our teacher, Rav Berland shlit"a.
After an hour and a quarter of singing, at 3:00 AM, our teacher, Rav Berland shlit"a, left the engagement celebration to the singing of "Light is sown for the tzaddik and joy for the upright of heart," and returned to the Holy City of Jerusalem, with a royal motorcade accompanying him back to his holy abode.
