“A voice of joy and salvation in the tents of the Tzaddikim.” This past Monday night, the eve of the 9th of Iyar, the engagement celebration took place for a grandson of The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a — the distinguished young man Avraham Rubinstein (may he live a long and good life), son of the honored son-in-law of the Nasi, the chassid R’ Natan Rubinstein shlit"a, son of the mashpia the chassid R’ Yehoshua Dov Rubinstein shlit"a — with the daughter of the family of the chassid R’ Nachman Goldschmidt shlit"a, among the esteemed Anash of our community in the city of Beit Shemesh.
The engagement took place at the “Tov HaChesed” halls in the Ramat Alef neighborhood of Beit Shemesh. At 12:45, The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, arrived at the celebration. He entered to the singing of “For length of days and years of life will be added to you,” and to the song “Rejoice, rejoice,” and he sat down on his holy chair at the head table. Immediately after the singing, he began delivering a fiery, flame-carving shiur about the greatness of a chosson and kallah, and about the greatness of dancing and niggunim. Below is a short excerpt from the shiur:
“At an engagement, the Chasam Sofer says that the chosson is like the Kohen Gadol, and every blessing that he blesses with—Heaven is obligated to agree to that blessing, and it is fulfilled…”
“So the more a person plays niggunim, the more he sings—Rebbe Nachman says, ‘Fortunate is the one who has understanding for the poor,’ for only through niggun a person can draw down all the wisdoms in the world—‘And know that through niggun he awakens all the souls…’”
For an entire hour, The Rav, Rabbi Berland shlit"a, poured into us words that hewed like flames of fire. After an hour, he began singing: “Rejoice, rejoice, beloved companions, as your Creator rejoiced with you in the Garden of Eden from the beginning.” The Rav shlit"a sang for about an hour and a quarter—together with the entire crowd that came to take part in the joy of the house of Tzaddikim. During the singing, The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, wrote the tena’im document and instructed his grandson, the chosson, to make the kinyan using the shtreimel of The Rav, Rabbi Berland shlit"a.
After an hour and a quarter of singing—at 3:00 in the morning—The Rav, Rabbi Berland shlit"a, departed from the engagement celebration to the song “Light is sown for the Tzaddik, and joy for the upright of heart.” He returned to the holy city of Jerusalem, with a regal convoy of vehicles escorting him back to his holy home.
