"And Now, During These Six Weeks, Be Strong Against the Yetzer Hara!" • A Letter of Hidden Strength for Young Men from Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a for the Holy Days of Shovavim

We are currently in the days of Shovavim (an auspicious six-week period for repentance), days that are exceptionally auspicious for the Tikkun (rectification) of Yesod (the spiritual foundation) and for strengthening oneself in guarding holiness and matters of Tikkun HaBris (rectification of the covenant).

To provide strength during these days, we present before you an awesome letter emanating from the pure heart of our teacher, The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, written in the year 5780 (2020) to the young men of the Shuvu Banim community. The letter calls upon the young men to strengthen themselves in Shmiras Einayim (guarding the eyes), and especially during these weeks, to be strong and withstand all the trials that the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination) places before them.

To the honor of my brothers and friends, the dear and beloved students of Shuvu Banim:

A CALL FOR STRENGTH IN SHMIRAS EINAYIM (GUARDING THE EYES) DURING THE DAYS OF SHOVAVIM!

To all "my brothers and friends, I shall now speak peace within you." This is a letter of encouragement to strengthen yourselves in Shmiras Einayim (guarding the eyes). Each and every one should no longer look at any forbidden woman, G-d forbid, nor any forbidden girl, G-d forbid, nor any forbidden telephone, nor any forbidden iPhone, nor any impure or non-kosher devices, G-d forbid, nor impure friends, nor any impure relatives. And now, during these six weeks, be strong against the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination), and do not let it cause you to stumble, G-d forbid. For Rabbeinu (Rebbe Nachman) said that we always have the power to overcome the Yetzer Hara that incites us to look where it is forbidden and causes us to stumble through forbidden sights at every moment and second. For now is a time of terrible judgments, and I have come here to strengthen your hands to guard your holy eyes, which are the "projectors" of the soul, and they must be guarded with the utmost care.

One who truly loves you,
Your faithful servant,
Eliezer Berland
