Commentary on Megillat Esther from the mouth of the holy Gaon and Tzaddik, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

After the booklet Shmiras HaEinayim (Guarding the Eyes) by our teacher, the holy Gaon and Tzaddik, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a (may he live long and good days), was received with enthusiasm on many tables, we are happy to present to you the next thing: A commentary on the Megillah (Scroll of Esther) based on the words of our teacher, the Rav (Rabbi Berland) shlit"a. It would be a shame to reach the holiday of Purim without the proper preparation.
"He is Ahasuerus who reigned"—the Gemara (Talmud) says he reigned of his own accord; he was neither a king nor the son of a king. Rather, he was a stableman (keeper of the horses); he had no royal mannerisms. Vashti, however, is immediately called "Vashti the Queen," as it is written: "Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women." But [she said to him], "You are not a king at all!" Since this was the argument between them, day and night she would despise him, saying, "You are not a king at all, and our entire marriage was a forced marriage. You are not a king; I am a daughter of kings."
She was always arrogant; Vashti was arrogant toward him because she considered herself a daughter of kings, believing the monarchy was more rightfully hers. Not only that, says the Chasam Sofer zt"l (of blessed memory), she told him that "Your entire kingdom is only in my merit." Generally, the honor a person has is in the merit of his wife; he has a home—it's all in the merit of his wife. A person's mazal (fortune) comes in the merit of his wife.
"One hundred and twenty-seven provinces"—Vashti said to Ahasuerus, "Your mazal (fortune) to rule over the 127 provinces is actually my mazal; it's not yours. I am a daughter of kings, the great-granddaughter of Nebuchadnezzar, the granddaughter of Evil-Merodach. So you rule in my merit; all 127 provinces are in my merit." (But in truth, it was in the merit of Sarah Imeinu [our mother Sarah]). One must know where Purim begins—everything begins with the Holy Patriarchs and Matriarchs...
