“I Will Betroth You to Me Forever” • The Engagement Celebration for the Great-Grandson of the Gaon and Tzaddik, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

עורך ראשי

On Sunday, the 25th of MarCheshvan, during the week of Parshat Toldos, the engagement celebration was held for the great-grandson of our teacher, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a (may he live long and good days). The groom is the excellent student Aharon, son of Rabbi Nachman Treisman, and the bride is the daughter of Rabbi Nachman Winzehandler, granddaughter of the Mashpia (spiritual mentor) Rabbi Yitzchak Winzehandler shlit"a.

The engagement celebration took place at the holy residence of our teacher, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a. During the event and the engagement seudah (festive meal), the Rav shlit"a delivered a holy discourse lasting nearly fifty minutes. At the conclusion of the lesson, the Rav shlit"a began to sing, and after a few minutes, he set the wedding date for the night of the 21st of Adar—the yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing) of Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk zt"l. He then drank a L'chaim with great joy and gladness for a Mazel Tov in the celebration of the house of Tzaddikim!

Below is a summary of the topics from the holy discourse delivered during the engagement ceremony:

At the moment of Chatzos (midnight), all judgments are sweetened. One must rise for Chatzos because until midnight there are judgments, and from midnight onwards, they are sweetened in the merit of those who rise for Chatzos.
It is written in the Midrash that the tribe of Zebulun is in the level of Keter (the highest Sefirah, Crown), as it says, "He shall dwell by the seashore."
When Deborah went out to fight Sisera, it was comparable to going out to fight Russia today. No tribe agreed to come except for Zebulun, who are "without a double heart" (possessing single-minded devotion).
Michal said to David, "I have never even seen my father’s hand," for they were all once the epitome of modesty.
Laban wanted to kill Eliezer (the servant of Abraham) twice—once with a knife and once with poison. He was saved in the merit of his Emunah (faith) and his bitul (nullification/devotion) to the Tzaddik. Regarding all the miracles that happened before this, such as flying through the air, they already knew such things existed. However, Bethuel and Laban did not know that Eliezer had not eaten the poison; the fact that one person eats the poison and the other dies was too much for them to ignore, which is why they said, "The matter has come from Hashem."
Balaam wanted Phinehas to kill him with his own sword because the Name of Hashem (the Tetragrammaton) was engraved upon it. But Phinehas did not agree and killed him with his (Balaam's) own sword.
There are three large letters in Megillat Esther—Tav (ת) and Shin (ש)—to hint that the decree to "destroy, kill, and annihilate" was delayed until the year 5700 (the era of the Holocaust).
In the past, we wanted to build an airport in Uman, but there were all sorts of people who blocked us.
Abba Umna would receive a greeting of peace from Heaven every day because he would not take money from his clients. Abaye would receive it every Friday afternoon, and Rava only every Yom Kippur eve. Rava was a spark of Lot, because the verse seemingly lists them out of order: "And Lot and his possessions, the son of his brother," which hints that Rava was a spark of Lot. Abaye did not understand why he did not receive the greeting every day and sent people to investigate Abba Umna. Two men arrived at his home, and he hosted them; during the night, they stole all his property. The next day, they offered it for sale to Abba Umna in the market, and he remained silent and overlooked everything.
One must know before getting married that on Erev Pesach (Passover Eve), your wife might throw you out of the house because you returned with a single crumb, telling you to go sleep on stones. One never argues with his wife! There was a story of someone on 9/11 whose wife told him, "Today you are going to take our son to the Cheder (school) instead of me." He did not argue, and therefore he was saved from the terror attack on the Twin Towers. There was another person who forgot his Tefillin on the counter and got off the plane at the last second; that flight was the one that crashed into the Twin Towers.
Yaakov Avinu (our forefather Jacob) "hid" in the house of Shem and Ever because Esau was seeking to kill him, so he went underground. After fourteen years, he went to Laban, and then Eliphaz came and took all his clothes. Hashem then caused a rider to arrive and immerse in the same place where he was, and that person drowned; in this way, expensive clothes and a horse came to him. He received "groom's guidance" from the Holy Shechinah (Divine Presence), as it is written in the Zohar that one must say to his wife, "This time, bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh, this shall be called woman"—that you are the only woman in the world.
When Rabba bar Nachmani wanted to pass through, he simply knocked down the wall. Elijah the Prophet did not come to the Idra (holy assembly) for three days. They asked him why, and he replied that he had to knock down the wall of the palace where Rav Hamnuna Sava and his companions were imprisoned in the Ono Valley.
