In Honor of the Yahrzeit of the Admor of Kaliv zt"l - An Interview on the Special Connection with Rav Berland shlit"a

In honor of the yahrzeit of the Admor of Kaliv zt"l, whose day of passing falls on the 23rd of Nisan, we revisit the special interview conducted on the Global Breslov Line (9148*) with Rabbi Chaim Binyamin Kirshenbaum hy"u - the Admor of Kaliv used to say: "In the Holocaust, the Nazis did not ask the Jew which party he belonged to."

The gabbai of the Admor of Kaliv and his closest confidant, Rabbi Chaim Binyamin Kirshenbaum, recounted - "The feeling after the Rebbe's passing is dreadful and terrible. On the Thursday night before Pesach, the Rebbe appointed me as the emissary for the search for chametz, and after the ten pieces were found, he performed the nullification of chametz. On Shabbat during Mincha, he still received an aliyah to the Torah, but his condition deteriorated."

"On the second day of Chol HaMoed, Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein visited him and told him that his face was glowing. The Admor of Kaliv replied that they were already waiting for him above. The Rebbe had self-sacrifice for the love of Israel, he would say, 'In the Holocaust, the Nazis did not ask the Jew which party he belonged to.'"

"The Rebbe went to bring Jews closer in the kibbutzim. He went to Kibbutz 'Ein Gev' and they did not understand what chassidim were doing there, he told them he wanted to install a mezuzah for them, and indeed it was the first mezuzah in the kibbutz. Afterwards, he volunteered and built them a synagogue."

"The Rebbe recounts that during the Holocaust, great heroes fell because they lacked emunah, whereas 'Muselmann' (a common term among Jewish concentration camp prisoners in the Holocaust to describe a prisoner on the brink of death due to starvation) with emunah survived and merited to ascend to Eretz Yisrael and establish faithful homes to Hashem. The Rebbe composed a song about this, that one must always instill emunah in Hashem."

"The Admor of Kaliv had a very strong connection with Rav Berland shlit"a. I heard with my own ears how when Rav Berland visited the Admor of Kaliv in the Beit Midrash of Karlin, he told him that he was adding 18 years to his life. This was a period when the Rebbe was ill, and Rav Berland told him he was adding 18 years to his life. These are not things that were told to me, these are things I heard with my own ears."

"The love and connection that the Admor of Kaliv zt"l had with Rav Berland shlit"a, they first met in Jerusalem, Rav Berland would come to the celebrations of the Kaliv house. The Admor would pray a lot for Rav Berland shlit"a, there are even letters about this. The prayers were mainly when Rav Berland was abroad. The Admor mentioned Rav Berland a lot for good, there was a very strong connection between them."

Thus far, the words of the gabbai of the Admor of Kaliv and his closest confidant, Rabbi Chaim Binyamin Kirshenbaum.
