Listen: The True Hope
What Would Our Holy Rebbe Say About the Song of Hope? Following the Persecution Journey Against the Righteous Rav Eliezer Berland shlit"a
Rebbe Nachman of Breslov writes that in order to subdue the power of a nation, one must sing its anthem. Yet, it is inconceivable that in order to subdue the religious decrees of the government in Israel, the elders of Breslov would begin to sing the national anthem with the lyrics as composed by N.H. Imber (may his name be blotted out), just as it is not plausible that the elders of Breslov in the generation of Reb Noson sang the Russian anthem with the lyrics in Russian to try and annul the decree of the Cantonists.
So, two possibilities remain to fulfill the words of Rebbe Nachman: to hum the melody of the anthem without words, or to invent new words worthy of being sung to the same melody of the anthem. From a halachic perspective, humming is considered like saying it after the fact (bedieved), whereas saying it explicitly is certainly the preferred way (lechatchila). Therefore, it seems that in order to fulfill simply and lechatchila the great secret that Rebbe Nachman revealed to us, it is appropriate to compose holy words to that same melody which is mistakenly called "Hatikvah," and it appears that through this, it is possible to subdue the power of the government and annul its evil decrees against the Torah of Israel.
Following the advice of the great and esteemed members of An"sh, simple and fundamental words were composed based on the teachings of Rebbe Nachman, and the pleasant result is presented to you in a simple and original amateur performance called "The Song of True Hope."
