More Prayers for Learning Torah in Depth and Sharpening the Intellect by Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlit”a

From “Leket Tefilot #17 – Limud Torah – Iyun, Hatmadah, Yeladim, Bachurim”

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, [in reaching my sixteenth birthday,] let me merit to fulfill the words of Rabbeinu in [Likutey Moharan] Lesson 38: “A cedar fell in our vicinity, and sixteen wagons went across its edge,” that Rabbeinu explains that a person needs to be proficient in all of Shas and proficient in the entire Torah. “Edge (CHuDo) means to sharpen (leCHaDed) one’s intellect, and “cedar” is referring to the true Tzaddik, as it is written, “The Tzaddik will flourish like a date palm, like a cedar in the Lebanon he will grow tall.” “Sixteen” alludes to the two Tablets of the Covenant. “Six” – these are the Tablets, whose length in six and whose width is six, and the thickness of the two Tablets together is also six. The additional ten [from the above mentioned “sixteen”] are the Ten Commandments: “I am Hashem your God,” “You shall have no other gods before Me,” “You shall not take the Name of Hashem your God in vain,” “Remember the Shabbat day to sanctify it,” “Honor your father and your mother,” and may I merit to honor my father and mother with self-sacrifice, as it is written [Tana Devei Eliyahu 26, 24], that as long as a person honors his father and mother, no sin of desecrating the Shabbat nor any other sin falls into his hands, and if he sinned, he is pardoned, as it is written, “Praiseworthy is the man who does this and the person who grasps it tightly: who guards the Shabbat against desecrating it” – just as through guarding the Shabbat all sins are forgiven, so too through honoring father and mother all sins are forgiven.

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, let me merit to cry every single day over all my blemishes, and may I merit to learn Torah, Shas-Gemara, and Poskim in depth and with sharpness, as our holy Rebbe writes in Lesson 38, “A cedar fall in our vicinity, and sixteen wagons went across its edge.” Let me merit, Merciful and Gracious One, to sharpen my intellect, and through this, may I merit for the skin of my face to be radiant, which is alluded to in the words: “wagons (k’ronot)” – “radiant (kerun) facial skin,” “edge (chudo)” – “sharpening (chidud) of the intellect.” Through sharpening the intellect, may I merit to a good year. May I merit for Your terror to fall upon all the nations, as Rabbeinu wrote in Lesson 101: “He set the borders of the peoples according to the number of the Children of Israel,” that through clear and illuminating study, we rule over all the nations. Therefore, the gematria (numerical value) of chidud 22 hasechel 355 (sharpening the intellect) = 377, pachd’cha 112 al 100 ha’amim 165 (You fear on the nations) = 377. For through learning in depth and while sharpening the intellect, we merit to the radiance of the facial skin, in the aspect of wagons, meriting to the aspect of forgiveness for all one’s iniquities like on Yom Kippur. Therefore, k’ronot 762 (wagons) plus 1 = 763 = and Yom 62 HaKippurim 361 Mechaper 340 (Yom Kippur atones) = 763.
