Moses Forcibly Recruited Israel for the War Against Midian

For every interpretation in the Torah, for every verse, there are a million questions.

Just now, there was an interpretation with questions regarding Nadab and Abihu, who walked behind Moses and Aaron and said about them, "When will these [elders] die?" ("Moses and Aaron were already walking on the way, and Nadab and Abihu were walking behind them, and all of Israel behind them. Nadab said to Abihu: When will these two elders die and you and I will lead the generation? Hashem (God) said to them: We shall see who buries whom. Rav Papa said: This is what people say: Many old camels carry the skins of young camels" [Sanhedrin 52a] ) ?

This is incomprehensible; even Dathan and Abiram (the famous rebels) did not say such words.

And another interpretation: it is written, "And there were delivered from the thousands of Israel" (Numbers 31:5). On the contrary, Israel did not want to go to the army; they were against the army—but Moses recruited them by force.

Now we need to be in Gaza—to eliminate a million terrorists there every day.

It is written: "Avenge the vengeance of the Children of Israel from the Midianites; afterward you shall be gathered to your people," meaning that Moses should take revenge on the Midianites and after that, he would pass away. And afterward, it is written: "And there were delivered from the thousands of Israel," because the People of Israel did not want to go to the army after they heard that Moses would pass away following the victory over the Midianites.

They said, "If Moses will die after the war with Midian, then no one is going to the war"—therefore, Moses took them by force into the army, "And they were delivered (vayimasru)."

They fought in Midian, "Avenge the vengeance of the Children of Israel from the Midianites," Midian comes after Moab. "From Aram, Balak the king of Moab has guided me, from the mountains of the East. Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, bring anger upon Israel" (Numbers 23:7).

"Curse Jacob for me, and come, bring anger upon Israel." No one wanted to go to the army, and Moses said, "The vengeance of Hashem against Midian." Because Hashem said, "Avenge the vengeance of the Children of Israel from the Midianites," but Moses said, "The vengeance of Hashem against Midian."
