Prayers for the Day’s Mitzvos on Purim, from the holy Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Presented here are prayers from The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, to say before performing the mitzvos of Purim:

Prayer before reading the Megillah:

To merit becoming “a head among the nations,” and long life, wealth, and honor

Before reading the Megillah

In the merit of reading the Megillah—in which “Mordechai and Esther” reigned over 127 provinces, corresponding to the years of Sarah’s life—for every year, every minute, every moment, and every second, Esther and Sarah conquered new provinces and new lands. Therefore, in the merit of reading the Megillah—through which we conquer all the lands of the world, which altogether total 127, the Name A-D-N-Y in “backward expansions,” A = 1, AD = 5, ADN = 55, ADNY = 65 ﬩ 1,—through reading this Megillah we merit: “To set me as a head of nations.” And therefore: “Give thanks 15 to the One Who performs 405 great 567 wonders 449 alone” = 1436; and through this: “Length 227 of days 100 is in her right hand 117; in her left 378 are wealth 576 and honor” 38 = 1436.‏

The revelation of Mordechai and Esther, who wage war against Amalek and Haman in every generation

After reading the Megillah

Master of the Universe: After we have read the Megillah and repaired all the wondrous rectifications of the Seven Kings who died—Bela son of Beor, Yovav son of Zerach, Chusham from the land of the Teimani, Hadad son of Bedad, Samlah of Masrekah, Shaul of Rechovos HaNahar, Chanan son of Achbor—and after drawing out from them all the sparks of holiness; and after we have completed these wondrous rectifications, which come once a year—because through reading the Megillah, “For the Children of Israel there was light in their dwellings,” for within the Megillah is hidden the Hidden Light of the Seven Days, the light with which Hashem created the world. For within Esther is hidden the Hidden Light, as is brought: “In mighty waters”—Esther 661 has the gematria of Fire 301, Lightning 302, Radiance 58 = 661. And in the merit of Mordechai—who was in the aspect of a Kohen = 75 Gadol—seventy-five thousand men were killed. For this is the secret of the goblet: the secret of 13 × 72 = 936, in the secret of Mordechai and Esther ﬩ 1 = 936; the secret of Mattisyahu 861 and his sons 74 ﬩ 1 = 936—and through his prayers. For Mattisyahu and his sons were the “impregnations” (ibur) of Mordechai and Esther: they become “impregnated” in every generation within the Tzaddikim of the generation, who wage war against Amalek-Haman, who are revealed anew in every generation. And as it is written in the Targum (Targum Yonasan on Megillas Esther, chapter 8, verse 15): “And the ten sons of Haman stretched out their hands, and went and sang before Mordechai the righteous, and said and praised the One Who gives reward to the Jews and repays the reward of the wicked upon their heads. And this Haman, the foolish stone, who trusted in his wealth and in his honor—Mordechai the humble broke him through his fasting and his prayers. And Esther the righteous, shining from the window—for it is impossible for the queen to go with people in the marketplace—Mordechai turned his eyes and saw Esther the queen, and answered and said to her: ‘Blessed is Hashem, Who did not give us as prey to their teeth.’ And then: ‘And Mordechai went out from before the king in royal garments—blue and white—with a great golden crown, and a robe of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad. And for the Jews there was light and joy and gladness and honor.’”

Prayer before giving Matanos LaEvyonim:

Before Matanos LaEvyonim

Master of the Universe, Almighty: In the merit of Matanos LaEvyonim, may I merit to be like Yosef 156 the Tzaddik 209, “the provider 557 for all 80 the people 110 of the land” 296. And reveal to me, in the merit of Matanos LaEvyonim, the Name of 42 (Shem Mem-Beis), 42 = 1450, just as You revealed it to Yael, as it says: “And she went softly” = 42—for she used the Name of 42. And in the merit of Matanos LaEvyonim, may I subdue the two awesome klipos: Sichon 134 king 90 of the Emori 256, and Og 73 king 90 of Bashan 357 = 1000. And through this, may the verse be fulfilled in me: “And I will break 503 the bars 449 of your yoke 160, and I will lead 63 you 461 upright” 602 = 2238. And may the verse be fulfilled in me: “Her mouth 95 she opened 493 with wisdom 75, and the Torah 1012 of kindness 72 is on 30 her tongue” 391 = 2238. And may I merit to “give birth” to Moshiach 358 ben 52 Yosef 156 and Moshiach 358 ben 52 David 24 = 1000.

To merit on Purim—through Matanos LaEvyonim—to create the new day

Purim is the festival of unity—when “You shall not favor the face of the poor, and you shall not honor the face of the great.” For on Purim one merits [-] Ila’ah, for then it is said: “And they drank and became intoxicated with him.” For on Purim we hear the angel with the thousand heads, the thousand mouths, the thousand voices, and the thousand melodies. For through tzedakah we create the new day: we create a new sun and new moon, and new stars. For Purim is the festival of unity, and the essence of unity is made through tzedakah—this is Matanos LaEvyonim—through which we rectify all the movements of the stars and the constellations in the heavens.

Prayer before Mishloach Manos:

To merit awakening supernal compassion through the Tzaddik; to be included one within another; to hear the song of the Keruvim; and to attain forgiveness of sins

Before Mishloach Manos

Master of the Universe, Almighty: At the time of Mishloach Manos, supernal compassion is awakened from the Kesser of Adam Kadmon—from the golden crown of Mordechai the Tzaddik. For through Mishloach Manos, when each person becomes included within his fellow, we ascend to the Kesser of Adam Kadmon, where all souls are included—in the secret of Amram, “pure speech.” For even Terach—the root of a soul that included all six hundred thousand—his soul-root was from “Chivarta,” where the light of the “Head that is unknown” is included: the light of the twelve stones of the Choshen—“Odem, Pitdah, Barekes, Nofech, Sapir and Yahalom; Leshem, Shevo and Achlamah; Tarshish, Shoham and Yashpeh.” These are the generality of all the lights of Adam Kadmon, and one merits this through Mishloach Manos. This is the secret that “community” (tzibbur) equals “compassion” (rachamim) 298: by being included within the entire community, one merits all the compassion in the world. Therefore, the “judgment of the Urim and Tumim” that we read on Shabbos Zachor is upon the heart of Aharon, who carries the judgment of the Children of Israel upon his heart. And then: “And the House 26 of Yaakov 412 will be fire 182, and the House 301 of Yosef 418 a flame” 156 42 = 1537. This is the secret of: “A woman 701 of valor 48 is the crown 679 of her husband” 107 ﬩ 2 = 1537. For Knesses Yisrael is called “a woman of valor.” Through this, all the lights of the stones of the Choshen become included within one another. For the Aron and the Keruvim are attained only through being included one within another. Then the Keruvim are “their faces one toward another”—then it is an eis ratzon, and then we hear the song of the Keruvim. For when Aharon the Kohen enters the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur, he hears the song of the Keruvim through “Mishloach Manos, each man to his fellow”—which we already fulfill on Rosh HaShanah, as it says (Sefer Nechemiah 8:10–12): “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and send portions to one who has nothing prepared for him, for the day is holy to our Master; do not be sad, for the joy of Hashem is your strength… And all the people went to eat and drink, and to send portions, and to make great joy, for they understood the words that were made known to them.” And when all of Israel merits being included one within another, then we merit the song of the Keruvim and forgiveness of sins. This is also accomplished on Purim, which is like Yom HaKippurim.

Prayer before the wine feast:

To merit subduing all our enemies and haters, and to rejoice in Hashem and in His salvation

Before the Purim meal

Master of the Universe, Almighty: Through the Purim meal, fulfill in me the verse—Hashem is One—“If 41 your enemy is hungry 272 feed him 377 bread 77 78 = 840; and if 47 he is thirsty 131 give him 416 water 90 = 684; for 30 coals 91 you 406 heap 419 upon 100 his head 507 = 1553.” And in the merit of Yoav 19, who fed all the people of Israel with delicate kinds of foods, may You bring into me the soul of Rebbe Nachman 268 Nachman 148 ben 52 Simchah 353 = 840. (And in the merit of the Purim meal, may we merit that our child will go forth like an arrow 118 from a bow 840 = 958.) And through this, may the Merciful Father 3 escort me by day 96 and by night 81 = 177 with the angels: Nuriel 298, Gavriel 246, Michael 101, Refael 311 = 958. And through the Purim meal, may I be able to heal all the sick in the world and revive the dead—just as Rabbah revived Rav Huna and returned him to life in the merit of the Purim meal. And may I be, all my days, a Merciful Father 3 in humility 133 and lowliness 822 = 958. And may I merit—Merciful Father 3—through the Purim meal, to subdue all four elements: fire 301, water 90, wind 214, dust 350 = 958; and to enter with my body into Gan 53 Eden 124 = 177, like Serach bas Asher 1411. And through this—through the Purim meal—may we subdue the klipah of Haman-Amalek, the eleven 11 chiefs of Esav: “And it was turned around, that 501 the Jews 355 80 themselves 50 ruled over their haters” 414 = 1411. And through this: “Hashem redeemed 34 26 Yaakov 401 182; do not fear 31 611 My servant 86 Yaakov” 182 = 1553. And through this: “And this 18 is Hashem 26 for Whom we hoped 172 36; let us rejoice 98 and be glad 359 in His salvation” 794 = 1553.‏

To merit always doing only Hashem’s will and intention, and to subdue all the wicked

Before the Purim meal

Master of the Universe, Almighty: Save me from all the awesome klipos in the world. Grant me the merit to do Your will with a whole heart, and that I never lose Hallel even once in all the days of my life. May I always do only Your good will, and always intend my heart toward Your good will. Save me from the klipos: donkey, ox, death, Lilith, the acronym Chashmal. And may I merit to draw upon myself the light of Chashmal like Shimshon the mighty; and may I always overcome my evil inclination, like Shimshon 696, whose soul was from Atik 580 Yomin 116 = 696. He was filled with Hashem is One 1 with trembling 220 and sweat 95, awe 247 and fear 48 and shaking 285 = 696. And may I merit through the Purim meal to subdue all the wicked and to bring down Haman—like Esther 661 the queen 100 = 761, who through the Purim meal killed Haman. And may I merit, in the merit of the Purim meal, to be a “creator” 209 of worlds 552 = 761: “For the Father 3 desires 401 the son 52305 = 761. And may I merit through the Purim meal to revive all the dead, just as Rabbah revived Rav Huna.

To merit patience (long-suffering), and the light of wisdom—and that the People of Israel multiply like the sand of the sea

Before the Purim meal

Master of the Universe, Almighty: Grant me, in the merit of the Purim meal, patience (long-suffering), like Esther 661 the queen 100 = 761, who was not afraid of wicked Haman and brought him to the feast, as it is written: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him bread… for you heap coals upon his head.” And through this, may the verse be fulfilled in me: “And a shoot 107 will come forth 223 from the stump 120 of Yishai 320 = 770, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.” And in the merit of this, may I merit the light 207 of wisdom 78 and knowledge 485 = 770. For “A gentle 170 answer 225 turns away 322 wrath” 53 = 550. And in the merit of the Purim meal, may the People of Israel multiply like the sand of the sea, as it is said: “And the people 110 of Israel 541 will be like the sand 64 of the sea” 55 = 770. Please, Hashem, in the merit of patience: “Show me 266 please 51 Your glory 40152 = 770, and may I merit to see You face to face. And also: “Hashem 43 remembered 184 26 His people 401116 = 770. And through this, may we merit the complete Geulah and the building of our Beis HaMikdash in the blink of an eye. Amen—forever, selah, and eternally.
