Prayers for Hitbodedut and Guarding the Eyes by Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlit"a

Prayers to merit to Hitbodedut by Moreinu HaRav Eliezer Berland shlit"a.

As is known, a central teaching of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov is the importance of the daily practice of hitbodedut, secluding oneself in prayer and meditation with the Creator. Therefore, we bring before you a series of prayers written by Moreinu HaRav Eliezer Berland shlit"a to merit to this exalted practice:

From Leket Tefilot #23 - "Hitbodedut"

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, Who can do everything, from Whom no plan is withheld, “And it happened in the days when the judges judged” (Ruth 1:1). Ribbono Shel Olam, Whom can do everything, let me merit to judge myself on every single matter, on every single movement, on every single breath, because if, God forbid, a person does not do hitbodedut and does not judge himself, he brings starvation to the world, and his livelihood dwindles and is lacking, and he brings endless calamities upon himself and upon the members of his household, and in the end is exiled from his land, his home, and his family, and goes to live in the field of Moav, and there his two sons die, and all his possessions are lost – the camels and donkeys, the cattle and flock – until he dies in the end, naked and lacking everything.

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, let me merit to yeshuv hadaat (a settled mind) and pure thought, and to do hitbodedut every single day for an hour, and that every single word will be exclusively for the sake of Heaven. Let me merit to emunah (faith) and to be saved from pride, and may all our words be spoken in gentleness, as it is written, “The gentle words of the wise are heeded,” and “The Eternal One of Israel does not lie and does not relent, for He is not a human that He should relent.” And may we merit to the verse, “Hashem has chosen Yaakov; do not fear My servant Yaakov.” May I merit to healthy and strong eyes that see well, all one hundred and twenty years.

Prayer for Hitbodedut and Guarding the Eyes

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, let me merit to guard my eyes. One Who can do everything, from Whom nothing is withheld, You are the Victor over all victors and the Gibbor (Mighty One) over all gibborim, fulfill in me the verse, “He who shuts his eyes from seeing evil; your eyes will behold the King in His splendor” – so may I merit through guarding my eyes to see the light of the King Messiah, who is the gibbor over all gibborim, the victor over all victors. Therefore, shemirat (guarding) 950 eynayim (the eyes) 180, plus one is the gematria (the numerical value) of 1131, which is or (the light of) 207 Melech (the King) 90 HaMashiach (Messiah) 363, or (the light of) 207 hagibbor (the mighty) 216 chayil (warrior) 48 = 1131. Then we will merit to an ingathering of the dispersed and all the sparks, as it is written (Yechezkel 28:25): “Thus says the Lord God: When I gather in the House of Israel from the peoples among whom they were scattered, then I will be sanctified through them in the eyes of the nations, and they will dwell on their land that I gave to My servant, to Yaakov. They will dwell upon it in security when I execute judgments upon all those who despoil them from all their surroundings, then they will know that I am Hashem, their God.” And from this day forward, may I merit to learn three hours every day, and to scream for a half-hour every day in the field, “Hosha na, shalosh sha’ot (Save please – three hours),” and to intend that “na” is the initial letters of Nadav and Avihu, that I should merit for their souls to be channeled into me, like Pinchas and Eliyahu, and through this, I will be able to learn three hours every day.
