The Secret of the Twenty-Third of Sivan:

“For the Jews there was light and joy, gladness and honor”—this was said about the twenty-third day of Sivan, for on that day the king’s scribes were summoned to write and to seal with the king’s signet ring, as it is written: “And you—write concerning the Jews as is good in your eyes,” granting them permission to strike those who seek their lives, who come to kill them. For until then, it had even been forbidden for the Jews to hold a sword or spear in order to defend themselves, and no sword or spear was found in the hands of the Jews, as it is written in I Samuel 13 that no sword or spear was found in the hand of the Children of Israel—only in the hand of Shaul and his son Yehonatan. Rabbi Chagi said: From where did Shaul and Yehonatan have a sword and spear? Rather, for the sake of their honor, an angel came and brought them a sword and spear. And the Sages said: A sword and spear fell for them from Heaven. So too, in the merit of Queen Esther, who pleaded again and again, as it is written about her: “Esther continued and spoke before the king, and fell at his feet, and wept, and begged him” to remove Haman’s evil counsel—who decreed to destroy and annihilate all the Jews, from young to old, children and women, on one day, the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. And only in the merit of Queen Esther was that awesome decree nullified.
