"There is No Atonement for the Sale of Joseph Until the End of All Generations" • The Daily Lesson from the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Presented before you is a summary of topics from the daily lesson as delivered by our teacher, the Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a – yesterday after the Maariv (evening) prayer, Tuesday night, the 10th of Kislev, Parshas Vayishlach:

Jacob took "fresh rods of poplar, hazel (luz), and chestnut" (Genesis 30:37). Jacob instilled into all the sheep the aspect of the "Luz" (the indestructible bone/place), which represents the Resurrection of the Dead. All the sheep amounted to 120 billion sheep; he could have redeemed Joseph, but the brothers did not reveal his whereabouts, and he did not know where Joseph had disappeared—"Joseph has surely been torn to pieces" (Genesis 37:33). Therefore, a sin-offering goat must be sacrificed until the end of all generations because there is no atonement for this. Twenty-two years of being without brothers, sisters, father, and mother—the 22 years of Jacob's sorrow has no atonement. This is why there are Holocausts and there is a war for 14 months with no end in sight. Now, eight fallen soldiers have fallen—five in the north and three in the south—and another five Breslov Chassidim, the most righteous of all generations, and until now, this has not been atoned for. Therefore, the work is to connect with the "Luz." Rebbe Nachman says in Torah 85 (Likutey Moharan) that only through the "Luz" does one enter Beis El. Only Rebbe Nachman revealed the secret of the "Luz," for everyone in Shuvu Banim, Jacob instills the secret of the Resurrection of the Dead; he can bring the Geulah (Redemption). The "Luz" is Leah, and "Beis El" is Rachel. Rachel is the Beis HaMikdash (Holy Temple). Rachel is the woman, and a woman has a mind a million times greater than a man's. Therefore, on the eve of Yom Kippur, she places the red dress on the window, and within a second it turns white—then all that remains is to dance. For even Rabbi Akiva was a spark of Zimri; if he had come to the lesson of Rabbi Eliezer the Great, he would not have needed the iron combs (of his martyrdom). And Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon was a reincarnation of Shechem ben Chamor, where everyone wanted to convert. The Rambam (Maimonides) disagrees with the Ramban (Nachmanides) [regarding the incident in Shechem]: if they touched one girl, they are all liable for death. They wanted to make a prisoner exchange deal, saying there's no need to kill an entire city, but the Rambam rules that one must kill the entire city. One must study "Hilchos Melachim" (Laws of Kings) every day with his wife; this was the Bar Mitzvah sermon of Shimon and Levi. The Ramban says they did teshuvah (repentance), but we rule according to the Rambam, and like Shimon and Levi, we must destroy all of Shechem. Therefore, one must travel to Shechem every night, because the sale of Joseph can only be atoned for by traveling to Shechem every night—at least once a week. This is a De'Oraisa (Torah obligation). Everyone should find the way, and with Hashem's help, in this merit, we will merit the complete Geulah (Redemption) speedily in our days, Amen!
