Vayikra El Moshe • Beginning the Writing of the Book of Vayikra in the Sefer Torah for the Success of the People of Israel and the Return of the Hostages

On Sunday, the second day of Rosh Chodesh (the New Month), the 1st of Tammuz, during the week of Parshas Chukas, an appreciation evening was held at the home of HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a for the donors of the Sefer Torah (Torah scroll) being written for the salvation of the People of Israel, for the elevation of the souls of those murdered in the 'Iron Swords' war, for the cessation of the war, for the safety of the soldiers, and for the swift return of the hostages, as well as the beginning of the writing of the book of Vayikra (Leviticus).

As previously published here, on the day of Ginnusia deMalka (the King's birthday)—the birthday of our teacher, the Rav shlit"a—the writing of the Sefer Torah began. Now, after more than seven months, the books of Bereishis (Genesis) and Shemos (Exodus) have been completed, and our teacher, the Rav shlit"a, was honored to write the beginning of the book of Vayikra (Leviticus). Our teacher, the Rav shlit"a, began with singing for several minutes, followed by words of inspiration from one of the speakers who encouraged and strengthened the audience regarding the merit of being partners in the Sefer Torah. Afterward, our teacher, the Rav shlit"a, delivered a Massa Kodesh (holy discourse) on the greatness and merit of writing a Sefer Torah, citing the words of the Gemara (Talmud) in Sanhedrin 21b regarding the immense stature of writing a Sefer Torah. In his holy way, he branched out into other topics, discussing the commentary of Rashi on the verse 'And among these there was not a man,' explaining that the women did not sin with the Golden Calf or in the desert, and from this we learn 'there was not a man,' but the women did indeed enter the Holy Land. He also spoke of the miracles that occurred on the day of Simchas Torah. He then moved on to discuss the weekly Torah portion—Chukas—and the question of why the Parah Adumah (Red Heifer) is written specifically here; he explained that in prayer, a person must be like 'dust and ashes,' disconnecting from all foreign and invalid thoughts. Later in the lesson, he dealt with the matter of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, which is an acronym for 'Zichru Toras Moshe' (Remember the Torah of Moses), as brought in Likutey Moharan, noting that this is a month of the giving of the Torah—the First Tablets. Toward the end of the lesson, the Rav shlit"a spoke with Aish Kodesh (holy fire) about the sanctity of the home and the sanctity of the Jewish person. At the conclusion of the holy words, they began songs of gratitude and praise to the Creator of the world for the merit of being partners in writing the Sefer Torah of the People of Israel, in the pure words of the Rav shlit"a. During this time, the donors merited to sit and sign a partnership deed for the Sefer Torah together with our teacher, the Rav shlit"a.

You too can take part in this great merit to write a Sefer Torah for the success of the People of Israel, for the rescue of the hostages, and in memory of those murdered.
