"We Learn Only the Holy Tongue" — Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a’s Daily Chizuk

The daily chizuk of The Rav, the holy gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a: “From Mordechai we learn that one must learn only the Holy Tongue.” Thursday, 14 Adar II 5782 — these are his holy words:
A certain learned man once came to Rabbi Chaim of Brisk and said to him: “I have proof that one must learn languages—English, French… You have to know Arabic. We learn this from Mordechai, who knew seventy languages.” Rabbi Chaim of Brisk answered him: “From Mordechai we learn exactly the opposite. Because the chamberlains, Bigsan and Seresh, spoke out loud. They were sure that Mordechai didn’t understand anything at all.” We see that someone who learns in cheder (the holy flock—tinokos shel beis rabban) doesn’t need to know anything—no language at all. Because they were confident that Mordechai didn’t know their language—but one of the Sanhedrin knows… Always, out of seventy, there is one who knows a little something—either French, or English—he knows something.Subscribe to Our Newsletter
