Why Did the Terrible Accident Happen in Jerusalem on Shamgar Street? — A New Prayer by the Gaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Last week, the Jewish people were struck with shock and disbelief, when an empty bus—without passengers and without a driver—ran over and killed Mrs. Shoshana Glushtain, age 30, a teacher from Ofakim, and her two daughters: her daughter Chaya Sarah, age 7, and her toddler daughter Chana, age 3, on Shamgar Street in the heart of the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Rabbi Berland shlit"a, in a new prayer about guarding the eyes, addresses the terrible accident and explains, in a spiritual way, how such disasters, rachmana litzlan, come about.

Here is the complete prayer:

Master of the World, Almighty One, from Whom no plan is withheld—grant me the merit to guard my eyes, and from now on may I no longer look at any woman who is not my wife, nor at any girl who is not mine, Heaven forbid. And may I know that upon every woman who is not mine, and upon every girl who is not mine, there rest 18 ribo—meaning 180,000—destructive angels. And in the very moment that one looks at a woman or a girl, Heaven forbid, permission is given to all the destructive angels to bring about road accidents, like what happened in Jerusalem on Shamgar Street. And thousands of people who are innocent of any wrongdoing are killed, Heaven forbid. Therefore, grant me the merit from now on not to look anymore at any woman who is not my wife, Heaven forbid.
