Why Was It Necessary to Write that the People Left Moshe

"And all the congregation of the Children of Israel went out from before Moshe" (Shemot 35:20) -- why did all of this have to be written?!  It is clear that after the lesson and after the exposition, that they left and each person went to his home...

Rather, in the people's leaving, each person to his home, everyone saw -- that everyone was at the lecture of Moshe Rabbeinu and heard the exposition of Moshe Rabbeinu -- they saw how in leaving the Tabernacle, how everyone walked with good manners without pushing, without pouncing on Moshe Rabbeinu in their leaving.  The "Emek HaDavar," the holy Netziv, says: Rather, everyone walked with phenomenally good manners, with reverence, with fear, and they walked backwards with their faces towards Moshe.

And so are the words of the Gemara in Yoma [53a]: Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani said in the name of Rabbi Yonatan: Scripture says (II Divrei HaYamin 1:13), "And Shlomo came to the high place in Givon Jerusalem" -- so what does Givon have to do with Jerusalem?  Rather, it compares his leaving Givon for Jerusalem to his coming from Jerusalem to Givon: Just as in his coming from Jerusalem to Givon, his face was towards the high place in the manner of his coming, so too was his leaving from Givon to Jerusalem -- his face was towards the high place in the manner of his coming [towards it].  And so too Kohanim in their service, and Levites on their platform, and Yisrael in their position, when they take leave, they would not turn their faces and go; rather they would turn their faces sideways and go.  And so too a student who takes leave from his Rabbi should not turn his face and go, rather he should turn his face sideways and go.

So would Rabbi Elazar do when taking leave of Rabbi Yochanan.  When Rabbi Yochanan would wish to go, Rabbi Elazar would bend over in his place; and when Rabbi Elazar would wish to go, he would walk backwards until he could no longer see Rabbi Yochanan.

Rava, when he would take leave of Rav Yosef, would walk backwards, until his legs struck [the door] and Rav Yosef's threshold would become full of blood [Rava's legs and the threshold would become full of blood from the blood that came out of Rava's legs when they would strike things on the way from walking backwards].  They said to Rav Yosef [who was blind]: Rava does such and such.  He said to them: So may it be His will that your head shall be raised above the whole city [that you will be Rosh Yeshiva of Mechoza].
