Without Torah There Is No Emunah and Bitachon - Parshat Behar from the Teachings of Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi in the Story of the Zohar, Witnesses to the Power of Self-Sacrifice - "And if you shall say, What shall we eat in the seventh year..." (Leviticus 25:20)

The question of what shall we eat? What shall we drink? It pursues each and every one, "And if you shall say, What shall we eat in the seventh year" you ask what shall we eat? Hashem said you will have all good! You will have abundance, you will have everything, Hashem says you will have all good, Hashem promises you will have all good, and you ask what shall we eat... Is this emunah in Hashem?!

The holy Zohar in Parshat Behar brings on the verse "What shall we eat, what shall we drink" – Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi stood on a high mountain, they had an abundance of food, they took with them several mules, several donkeys, an abundance of food, they stand on the mountain and see something shocking, they see two people walking in the heart of the desert who found a man who had lost his way and lay for two days without food, dying in the heat of the sun, moments before death, that man tells them, "I haven't eaten for two days, I haven't drunk," so one of them gives him food to drink, the other shouts at him "What are you giving him! Don't give him! It's forbidden! And you shall greatly guard your souls!""Pikuach nefesh, I don't allow you, let him die! What do you care if he dies! Your life comes first!"

"What do you care that I'm giving him?"

He told him, "If you give him all the food, you will eventually come to me, ask from me, want food from me, and then I won't give you anything!

And all this story is seen by Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi from afar. Rabbi Yossi and Rabbi Chiya understand from the movements everything that is happening there, how he shouts at him not to give him food, and the other continues, feeding him, giving him drink, caressing him, lifting him until he recovers. That one gave him all the water he had, all the food he had, he was left with nothing, not a drop of water.

These two continue to walk alone, after half an hour, the one who gave all his food, all his water, gets a sunstroke, he is in the heart of the desert, 12 noon, the sun is scorching at 50 degrees Celsius, he falls faint under a tree. The other said to him, "You see? I told you that you would faint, I told you that you would die without food and drink," now I leave you here, I don't care about you, and he left him in the heart of the desert.

With Such Self-Sacrifice, Surely There Will Be a Miracle

And when Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi saw that one lying under the tree fainting, Rabbi Chiya said to Rabbi Yossi, "We have an abundance of food, let's give him, let's run to him, we need to save him!" Rabbi Yossi answers him, "Now we will sit and watch" "Surely Hashem will perform a miracle for him" – Surely there will now be a great miracle, there is a story here, don't enter in the middle of the story, don't rush to give him the food, the world is not ownerless! A person gives his food, now he will die?! There is no such thing! Here there will be a great miracle!

They stood there and saw how he fell asleep, suddenly a giant snake came crawling towards him that could swallow him in one gulp, Rabbi Chiya said, "Woe to that man" – it's over, this is his end! Poor thing, he has to die in such a strange way, Rabbi Yossi said, don't fall into despair, after all, he gave all his food, all his water, he trusted in Hashem, so Hashem will not abandon him, you will see what a miracle he will have. Suddenly they see a snake even bigger than the first one coming down from the tree, really giant! And it bites the head of the first snake and swallows it and kills it, and that man remains whole, sleeping peacefully in the heart of the desert, and then Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi descended to him from the mountain, woke him from his sleep, gave him food and drink, and told him all the miracles that happened to him.

Hashem Is Always With Me

One must know that before a person comes into the world, Hashem has already prepared all those who will help him, who will save him, who will support him, wherever a person goes, at every step, there is someone ready to help him. Even if you are in the heart of the desert, in the heart of the sea, there is always someone standing next to you, you are never lost, Hashem is everywhere, everywhere Hashem is with you, at every moment the salvation of a person is ready, he just needs to give one true cry to Hashem and he will already have salvation, if only he cries out "Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad", "Please Hashem, save now" in the merit of our Rebbe... then they will immediately save you.

A person needs a little bitachon, a little emunah, a little to sing, to pray with intention, not to fear where will I get money? After all, the One who created you – created the money, created everything, He created you even before the money, all the money in the world belongs to you, Hashem wants you to learn Torah. You have committed many sins, so it doesn't fall to you directly, it doesn't fall to you directly from the ceiling.

Trust in Hashem Because Only Thus Will Redemption Come

Why do you worry? Everything is announced in heaven! 40 days before a person is created, it is planned in heaven that on this day he will have a house, and on this day he will have a field, livelihood, everything is announced even before a person is born, because redemption can only come when a person trusts in Hashem, his eyes look to Hashem "The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in its time", in its time! Everything in its time, in its time what comes to a person - an apartment, furniture, etc., everything is in its time because the very pondering over money, the very thought about money distances his salvation, distances from him the apartment, distances from him the livelihood, all life a person thinks about livelihood, he doesn't know that the moment he stops thinking about livelihood, then the livelihood will come to him, will run to him. What is "livelihood"? Livelihood is "Par-nasa" you run after the "Par" and the "Par" travels, the "Par" escapes, "Par-nasa" travels with an "ayin", you chase after livelihood? Then the livelihood escapes you.

The Rebbe says in Torah 248 – that bitachon is without end, there is no limit to bitachon "Trust in Hashem forever" – bitachon is something without boundaries, there are no boundaries to emunah and bitachon. The essence of perfect bitachon is through the intellect, through the Torah, bitachon comes from intellect! If you have no intellect, you have no bitachon and emunah, you learn Torah then you have bitachon, you don't learn Torah then you have no bitachon, the Rebbe says – if you would learn Torah then you would have intellect and you would know that everything is Hashem, therefore a person needs to learn much Gemara and then his mind will be straightened, because according to the intellect so is the bitachon. The more a person has intellect, more mind, then he has more bitachon, more emunah.

One must know that before a person comes into the world, Hashem has already prepared all those who will help him, who will save him, who will support him, wherever a person goes, at every step, there is someone ready to help him. Even if you are in the heart of the desert, in the heart of the sea, there is always someone standing next to you, you are never lost! Hashem is everywhere! Everywhere Hashem is with you! At every moment the salvation of a person is ready! He just needs bitachon! He just needs to give one true cry to Hashem! One true cry and he will already have salvation, if only he cries out "Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad" "Please Hashem, save now" in the merit of our Rebbe... then they will immediately save you.
