Gathering Tzedaka (charity) on one shoe
Rosh Yeshivat Maginei Aretz, Rav Michael Gol relates: “Many years ago, we entered the large Torah hall of Yeshivat Ponevitch with the goal of collecting money for the wedding of Rav Berland’s daughter. To our astonishment, one of the important Rosh Yeshivas, upon hearing for whom we were gathering the money, stopped his learning and accompanied us while encouraging the many students of the yeshiva and kollel to donate generously, and thus, for the sake of that Rosh Yeshiva, their hearts opened up and the contributions multiplied. After the Rosh Yeshiva was satisfied, he explained to us the reason for his enlisting himself for the purpose of fundraising for the wedding of Rav Berland’s daughter: “Many years ago, a kollel student, an important Torah scholar here in Bnei Brak became caught up in many debts and a very difficult financial situation, and Rav Berland, who was then a young kollel student amongst the students of the yeshiva, went out on a fundraising campaign on all the streets of the city with self-sacrifice. I accompanied him, and on the way I saw how one shoe was torn. He picked it up [the shoe] and continued to walk for hours barefoot in the blaring sun until he succeeded in gathering a substantial sum of money. I was very amazed. I saw what is kindness for one’s fellow. I was amazed by the greatness of the soul of Rav Lazer Berland, and therefore it’s no wonder that I went out of my way when you came to gather money for him…”
The Torah of Kindness – 12 hours for another person
One of the important Torah scholars in Breslov today relates that in his youth, despite being a son to a Breslover Chasid, nonetheless, he still hadn’t acquired a proper way of learning until after Rav Berland once sat with him in the Breslov yeshiva in Bnei Brak several hours and related to him the whole story of Rabbi Yisrael Ber Odessa’s drawing close to Breslov and strengthened him a lot in the area of Rabbeinu HaKadosh with regard to learning. When the youth voiced to Rav Berland his problem in understanding his learning and his being without a chavruta (learning partner), the Rav said to him that from today he would be his chavruta, and so for at least a half-year, the Rav learned with him chavruta every day for around 12 hours! When in the middle the youth would go to lunch, the Rav would stay in the yeshiva and afterwards would continue with him. Only in the merit of this, the youth became an important Torah scholar who sits every day on the Torah and the Avodah (service of Hashem).
Similarly, Rav Nachman Horowitz relates about another Torah scholar and Breslov Chasid who personally related to him how Rav Berland mamash stood him on his feet. This was after he was mamash weak in his learning and almost left the Torah world completely. Over the course of a full month, Rav Berland learned with him every day for several hours.

Shining shoes
The acts of kindness of our Rebbe Rav Berland shlit”a already began in his younger years. Rav Nachman Horowitz relates to “Hitchadshut” that he heard from Rav Berland’s friends who learned together with him in Kfar Hasidim, that the Rav was accustomed every Motzshei Shabbat (Saturday night) to shine and clean all the shoes of all the yeshiva students so that they would be clean all week long.
Hospitality to guests
After our Rebbe Rav Berland begin his work of outreach, his home turned into an accommodation for guests with the Rav and Rabbanit bringing to their home all the students of the Yeshiva and all types of people in need of chizzuk (strengthening), while laundering their clothes and taking care of their food. All of this was in spite of the crowdedness in their home, and all of this with a good feeling and warmth. More than once, the Rabbanit and her children went out to search for mattresses for the guests… and at night the entire house was full of mattresses.
Rav Nachman Horowitz further relates that the door of the Rav’s home in Bnei Brak didn’t have a cylinder and lock which closes the door – a house of hospitality to every person in need. This was to such a point that once when someone came to the Rav’s house to go with him to the field, the Rav told him that he couldn’t because in every room of their house several people were sleeping at the moment!
Bring the poor to your house
Rav Nachman Horowitz relates in the name of Rav Nissim Gweta another amazing story of kindness, which the latter heard from an eyewitness – a taxi driver. There was a taxi driver in Yavneh who would frequently take our Rebbe Rav Berland to the field. Once, while returning from hitbodedut at late night hours, the Rav requested from the taxi driver to travel in the direction of the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station. When they arrived there, they saw a drunk sleeping on the ground with filthy clothes… To the astonishment of the taxi driver, the Rav woke up the drunk and brought him into the taxi, and in this way they came to the house of the Rav. There Rav Berland took care of him for several months, rehabilitated him and concerned himself with all his needs, and afterwards even married him off.
Rav Berland sleeps on the floor
A kollel student relates a story which gives us a little glimpse of the greatness of the unusual hospitality of our Rebbe Rav Berland and the Rabbanit. Once this kollel student came to Bnei Brak in the evening hours for a number of reasons, and in his preparing to return to Jerusalem, he understood that he was late for the final bus. In those days, there wasn’t another possibility for traveling to Jerusalem. Being acquainted with Rav Berland, he decided to walk to his house, and so the Rav warmly received him, fed him, and gave him a bed to sleep on. When he woke up, he was astounded to see the Rav sleeping on the floor.
He distributed widely to the destitute – kindness with his money
The avodah of Tzedaka of our Rebbe Rav Berland arouses amazement, acquiring an unfathomable quality. Of course, also this avodah already began in his younger years in yeshiva in Kfar Hasidim. In those days, he would bring a cake and the like and would cut a slice for himself and the rest he would distribute to others. (So related the Gaon Rav Aharon Golovenditz zt”l, who learn in Kfar Hasidim with the Rav shlit”a).
Purchase credit
There was kollel student who related to Rav Berland that he would spend the Shabbat by his father-in-law because of the fact that his pocket was empty, and he couldn’t make Shabbat in his home. The Rav tried to bring him a sum of money, but he refused to accept it. To his wonder, a short while later he received a telephone call from the grocery store near his home, informing him that he had a purchase credit of 2,000 NIS, which someone donated for him…
The Steipler’s instruction
The majority of the stipend which he would receive from the kollel, Rav Berland would distribute to Tzedaka already before he reached his house, when he saw poor people or debtors, etc. Because of this, the Steipler (Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky zt”l) instructed that the stipend be brought directly to the Rabbanit tlit”a, so that she would have a livelihood for the home.
Tzedaka on the account of teeth
There was a period that our Rebbe Rav Berland was in need of dental care in his entire mouth, something which cost a fortune. However, it was put off for one reason: every time that the amount of money had accumulated, the Rav would give it over directly to all types of poor and people who were close to him who needed money, and this was in spite of the great suffering from toothaches which the Rav went through then…

Rosh Yeshivat Maguinei Aretz, Rav Michael Gol raconte: “Plusieurs années auparavant, nous entrâmes dans le hall de Torah de la yeshivat Ponevitch avec le but de récolter de l’argent pour le mariage de la fille de Rav Berland. À notre étonnement, un des importants Rosh Yeshivas, en entendant de qui nous étions en train de rassembler de l’argent, arrêta son étude et nous acompagna en encourageant les nombreux étudiants de la yeshiva et kollel à donner généreusement, et ainsi, en l’honneur de ce Rosh Yeshiva, leurs cœurs s’ouvrirent et les contributions se multiplitèrent. Après que le Rosh Yeshiva soit satisfait, il nous expliqua la raison pour laquelle il s’enrola pour le but de la collecte de fonds du mariage de la fille de Rav Berland:
“Plusieurs années auparavant, un étudiant de kollel, un important érudit en Torah ici à Bnei Brak était pris par de nombreuses dettes et par une très difficile situation, et Rav Berland, qui était un jeune étudiant de kollel parmi les étudiants de la yeshiva, sortit en une campagne de collecte de fonds dans toutes les rues de la ville avec self-sacrifice. Je l’acompagna, et sur le chemin. Il ramassa [la chaussure] et continua de marcher pendant des heures pied nu au grand soleil jusqu’à qu’il réussisse dans la collecte d’une somme substantielle. Je vis qu’est ce qu’une bonté pour son prochain. J’étais étonné de la grandeur de l’âme de Rav Lazer Berland, et par conséquent ce n’est pas étonnant que je soit sorti de mon chemin quand vous êtes arrivé pour rassembler de l’argent pour lui…”
La Torah de Bonté – 12 heures pour une autre personne
Un important érudit en Torah aujourd’hui chez Breslev raconte que lors de sa jeunesse, malgré qu’il soit un fils d’un Chasid Breslev, néanmoins, il n’avait pas encore acquis un niveau convenable d’étude jusqu’à après que Rav Berland une fois s’assit avec lui dans la Yeshiva Breslev à Bnei Brak plusieurs heures et lui raconta l’histoire complète de Rabbi Yisrael Ber Odessa se rapprochant de Breslev et le renforça dans le domaine de Rabbeinu HaKadosh en regard de l’étude. Quand il exprima à Rav Berland son problème dans la compréhension de son étude et d’être sans une chavruta (partenaire d’étude), le Rav lui dit que depuis aujourd’hui il serait sa chavruta et ainsi pour au moins une demi-année, le Rav apprenait avec lui en chavruta chaque jour environ 12 heures! Quand au milieu de la journée le jeune allait déjeuner, le Rav restait à la yeshiva et après continuait avec lui. Seulement par ce mérite, le jeune devint un important érudit en Torah et en Avodah (service de Hashem).
De même, Rav Nachman Horowitz raconte à propos d’un autre érudit en Torah et Chasid Breslev qui personnellement lui relata comment Rav Berland mamash le plaça sur son pied. Ce fût après qu’il était mamash faible dans son étude et presque tomba du monde de la Torah complètement. Au cours d’un mois entier, Rav Berland apprit avec lui chaque jour pendant plusieurs heures.

Les actes de bonté de notre Rebbe Rav Berland shlit”a commençait déjà dans ses années de jeunesse. Rav Nachman Horowitz raconte à “Hitchadshut” qu’il entendit des amis de Rav Berland qui apprenaient ensemble avec lui à Kfar Hasidim, que le Rav était accoutumé chaque Motzshei Shabbat (Samedi soir) de cirer et nettoyer toutes les chaussures de tous les étudiants de la Yeshiva de ce fait elles seraient propre pour toute la semaine.
Hospitalité des invités
Après que notre Rebbe Rav Berland commença son travail de rapprochement, sa maison se transforma en un logement avec le Rav et la Rabbanite amenant à leur maison tous les étudiants de la Yeshiva et tous types de personnes en besoin de chizzuk (renforcement), tout en nettoyant leurs affaires et prenant soin de leurs nourritures. Tout ceci était en dépit de l’encombrement de la maison, et tout ceci avec un bon sentiment et chaleur. Plus d’une fois, la Rabbanite et ses enfants sortirent pour chercher des matelas pour les invités… et la nuit la maison entière était remplie de matelas.
Rav Nachman Horowitz relate également que la porte de la maison du Rav à Bnei Brak n’avait pas de cylindre et serrure qui fermaient la porte – une maison d’hospitalité pour chaque personne dans le besoin. C’était à un tel point qu’une fois quand quelqu’un venait à la maison du Rav pour aller avec lui au champ, le Rav lui disait qu’il ne pouvait pas car dans chaque chambre de leur maison plusieurs personnes étaient en train de dormir à ce moment!
Amener le pauvre à votre maison
Rav Nachman Horowitz raconte au nom de Rav Nissim Gweta une autre histoire incroyable de bonté, dont ce dernier entendit d’un témoin – un conducteur de taxi. Il y avait un conducteur de taxi à Yavneh qui fréquemment prenait notre Rebbe Rav Berland au champ. Une fois, en retournant d’hitbodedut tard dans la nuit, le Rav demanda au taxi de voyager en direction de la station central de bus de Tel Aviv. Quand ils arrivèrent la-bas ils virent une personne saoule sur le sol avec des vêtements sales… À l’étonnement du taxi, le Rav réveilla la personne et l’amena au taxi, et de cette façon ils allèrent à la maison du Rav. Là-bas le Rav Berland prit soin de lui pendant plusieurs mois, le rehabilitant et s’occupa lui-même de tous ses besoins, et après le mariage même.
Rav Berland dort sur le sol
Un étudiant de kollel raconte une histoire qui donne une petite lueur de la grandeur de l’hospitalité inhabituel de notre Rebbe Rav Berland et de la Rabbanite. Une fois ce kollelman vint à Bnei Brak dans les heures du soir pour un nombre de raisons, et dans sa préparation pour retourner à Jérusalem, il comprit qu’il était tard pour le bus final. En ces jours, Il n’y avait pas d’autre possibilité pour voyager à Jérusalem. Connaissant Rav Berland, décida de marcher à sa maison, et ainsi le Rav le reçut chaleureusement, le nourrit, et lui donna un lit pour dormir. Quand il se réveilla, il était étonné de voir le Rav dormir sur le sol.
Il distribuait largement au destitué – de la bonté avec son argent
L’avodah de la Tzedaka de notre Rebbe Rav Berland suscite l’étonnement, acquérant une qualité insondable. Bien sûr, également cette avodah commença déjà dans ses jeunes années en yeshiva de Kfar Hasidim. En ces jours, Il apportait un gâteau et autres et coupait un morceau pour lui-même et le reste il le distribuait aux autres. (Que relatait le Gaon Rav Aharon Golovenditz zt”l, qui étudia à Kfar Hasidim avec le Rav shlit”a).
Rachat de crédit
Il y avait des étudiants de kollel qui relatait à Rav Berland qu’il passait le Shabbat chez son beau-père du fait que son portefeuille était vide, et il ne pouvait pas faite Shabbat chez lui. Le Rav essaya d’amener une somme d’argent, mais il refusa de l’accepter. À sa surprise, un instant plus tard il reçut un coup de téléphone de l’épicerie proche de chez lui, l’informant qu’il avait un crédit d’achat de 2,000 NIS, que quelqu’un donna pour lui …
L’introduction du Steipler
La majorité du revenu qu’il recevait du kollel, Rav Berland le distribuait à la Tzedaka déjà avant qu’il atteigne la maison, quand il voyait des pauvres, débiteurs, etc. À cause de ceci, le Steipler (Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky zt”l) commanda que les revenus soit directement apporté à Rabbanite tlit”a, de ce fait elle aurait une subsistance pour la maison.
Tzedaka sur le compte des dents
Il y’avait une période que notre Rebbe Rav Berland était dans le besoin pour sa bouche complète, quelque chose qui coûte une fortune. Toutefois, c’était reporté pour une raison: chaque fois que le montant d’argent s’accumulait, le Rav l’offrait directement à tous types de pauvres et personnes qui étaient proche de lui, et c’était en dépit de la grande souffrance des maux de dents dont le Rav traversa ensuite…
