A Shiur for the Kollel Avreichim of “Shuvu Banim” in the Old City, at the Home of Rabbi Berland shlit"a

These are the same avreichim who “give their lives” in the tent of Torah—from midnight until Ma’ariv together with Rabbi Berland shlit"a—just as The Rav shlit"a established for them, for those avreichim, forty-five years ago.
Those avreichim entered the shiur in the residence of Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a on the night of 21 Av, before Ma’ariv. At the beginning of the shiur, Rabbi Berland shlit"a dealt with the halachos of testimony and the fine points of how a warning must be given regarding laws of capital punishment. After that, he spoke about using one’s time for Gemara. Then he spoke about a child’s stage of development—at age 12, which is the most important time in life—and how worthwhile it is for a child to invest as much as possible during that time. He explained that today children are not taught the words of the Gemara properly—for example, in Eilu Metzi’os regarding “a kav within four amos.” As is his holy way, he entered into this sugya and began to examine it in the words of the Gemara and the shiurim. After that, he continued with Aggadic teachings in Shas.
Afterward, he expanded with words about the greatness of the staff of Moshe, and more. At the end of the shiur, he spoke about the war with Ammon and Moav in the days of Yehoshafat (as brought in Divrei HaYamim II, chapter 20): that through song and thanksgiving, the children of Ammon and Moav fell before them without their doing anything. He explained why the singers said only, “Give thanks to Hashem, for His kindness is forever,” because when a non-Jew dies we do not sing—just as Hashem said to the ministering angels at the Sea of Reeds: “My handiwork is drowning in the sea…”
