Prayer for the Molad of the Month of Elul 5786

By the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

The Molad (new moon) of the month of Elul: Thursday morning, 8:54 — the month of mercy and teshuvah (repentance), when all the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, and especially the gates of teshuvah.

First Prayer — For the Molad of the Month of Elul

Master of the Universe, Omnipotent One, as we stand before the most awesome and formidable month of the year, when all the gates of Heaven are opened. As we request in the 'Avinu Malkeinu' prayer, "Open the gates of Heaven and open Your good storehouse for us." At the exact time of the Molad (new moon), which will be on Thursday morning at 8:54, please open for us all the fifty gates of understanding and all the thirty-two pathways of wisdom. May all our minds be opened so that we can study the entire Shas Gemara (Talmud), Ketzos HaChoshen, Nesivos HaMishpat, Tekfo Kohen, Meiri, Rashba, Ramban, Ritva, Yad Ramah, Beis Meir, and all the commentaries in the world, both Rishonim (early commentators) and Acharonim (later commentators). The 14 volumes of the Rambam, along with the Kesef Mishneh, Lechem Mishneh, Mishneh LaMelech, Maggid Mishneh, Hagahos Maimoniyos, Hagahos HaRamach, Rabbeinu Yeruchem, and Mahari Korkus. Likutey Moharan, Likutey Halachos, Sippurey Ma'asiyos (Rebbe Nachman's Tales), Likutey Eitzos, and Likutey Tefillos. Noda BiYehudah, the Responsa of the Chasam Sofer, the Chiddushim (novellae) of the Chasam Sofer, and the Chiddushim and Responsa of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. Please, Hashem, grant me (87) the merit of the verse, "Set me (410) as a seal (474) upon (100) Your heart (52), as a seal (474) upon (100) Your arm (303)" = 2000, and "Show me (276) Your (401) appearance (271), let me hear (495) Your (401) voice (156)" = 2000.

Second Prayer — For the Molad of Elul

Master of the Universe, Omnipotent One, from whom no purpose can be withheld. Grant us the merit during the Molad of Elul, at 8:54 on Thursday morning, that You will open for me all the gates of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge—the 49 gates of understanding and the 32 gates of wisdom. May I merit, during the Molad of the month of teshuvah (repentance), that You open for me all the gates of teshuvah. As we say in every Maariv (evening) prayer, "With wisdom He opens gates, and with understanding He changes times and alters the seasons, and arranges the stars in their watches in the sky according to His will." For during the Molad of the month of Elul, which will be at 8:54 on Thursday morning, all the gates are opened. At that time, Hashem moves all the stars, and the gates of Heaven are opened, just as we say, "Our Father, our King, open the gates of Heaven"—all the gates of understanding and knowledge, and especially the gates of teshuvah. For then we can merit to achieve teshuvah out of true love, through which intentional sins are transformed into merits. And through this, all our enemies will fall beneath us and turn to dust and ashes under the soles of our feet, as it is stated in the Haftarah of Eikev, "Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their princesses your nursing mothers; they shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of your feet."

With the blessing of the Torah, Eliezer Berland
