Prayer for Verbal Confession and Annulment of Vows on the Eve of Rosh Hashanah
Master of the Universe, the Almighty, grant me the merit to confess all my sins on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, and not to forget to detail any sin. In particular, [help me confess] all my sins regarding the blemish of the covenant (sexual purity) that I have committed, and how I have caused the multitudes to sin. I was not careful in my speech and my conduct. I was like the daughter of Rabbi Chanina ben Teradion, who refined her steps because of the praises showered upon her by the Roman soldiers. Likewise, I have erred in my foolishness day and night, every moment and second, sinning and causing others to sin. But just as You performed miracles for the daughter of Rabbi Chanina ben Teradion, accepted her teshuvah (repentance), and cushioned her with endless miracles; and just as You performed miracles and wonders for her brother-in-law, Rabbi Meir, saving him from the dogs and redeeming him from the cruel Roman soldiers because he merited complete teshuvah; and just as You forgave Rabbi Elazar ben Durdaya, and Yosi Meshita, who returned in complete teshuvah. He had joined the Roman soldiers and went in to bring out the Menorah of the Holy Temple, but ultimately agreed to let them saw him with iron saws [rather than enter the Temple again to steal]. And [just as You forgave] Yakum Ish Tzrorot, who was the worst of them all, and humiliated his uncle beneath the beam upon which he was about to be crucified. Ultimately, he too did true teshuvah, more than anyone, and in a single hour preceded Rabbi Yosi ben Yoezer to the life of the World to Come. He merited to fulfill upon himself the four death penalties of the Rabbinic Court: he tied a rope to a hook protruding from the ceiling, and beneath the rope he planted a sword. He surrounded it with branches, twigs, and wood, and surrounded the wood with stones. He kindled the fire, jumped, and hung himself on the rope. As the fire licked his body, the rope snapped and he fell upon the sword into the terrible fire, with all the stones and fire falling upon him. Rabbi Yosi ben Yoezer saw all of this, and literally saw how he was delighting in supernal delights from the fire, the stones, the sword, and the rope, until Rabbi Yosi ben Yoezer merited to see his bed hovering in the air, preceding him into the World to Come. So too, may You grant me the merit to return in true teshuvah in the blink of an eye. Amen, Netzach, Selah, Va'ed.
