Prayer to be a Simple Jew who Believes in Hashem
Master of the Universe, grant me the merit to be a simple Jew who believes in You, clean from all evil and foreign thoughts. May I never have any foreign or evil thought, Heaven forbid. May I merit to fulfill all that is said regarding the daughters of King Yannai, whose way was to be particular about receiving a tarkava (a large measure) of dinars for betrothal. So too, they cannot be betrothed with a single dinar; even if she extended her hand and accepted it, the Talmud states that she is not betrothed, since she is accustomed to being particular. For Hashem overturned the mountain over the people of Israel like a tub (forcing them to accept the Torah at Mount Sinai), because the people of Israel, in their root, want the Torah in every situation. This root is the root of the Torah, and a Jew cleaves to the Torah constantly with all his 248 limbs and 365 sinews. Therefore, the people of Israel are the ones who will reach the level of "No eye has seen it, O God, besides You." As it is written: "Then He remembered the days of old, Moses and His people: Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is He who put His holy spirit in their midst? Who caused His glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses, dividing the water before them to make for Himself an everlasting name?" And may I merit to perfect the image of man, just as Devorah the Prophetess merited. Through her, everyone fulfilled the verse, "You who ride on white donkeys," which refers to the promise, "If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow." For Devorah was a spark of Moshe, and Yael was a spark of Tzipporah, which has the same numerical value (gematria) as semichah (blanket). As Reish Lakish said, there is no person on earth who knows the true meaning of the word semichah except that it means "Shmi-Koh" (My Name is here)—meaning that My Name testifies about her that the wicked Sisera did not touch her. Because Devorah, the wife of Lapidot, was surrounded by a wall of fire, with torches of fire. And since all of Israel saw that the Shechinah (Divine Presence) was with her, they obeyed her words and followed in her footsteps. As it says, "Was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?" For they had neither shield nor spear; rather, they threw dust and it became swords, straw and it became arrows. And all this took place at the waters of Megiddo, for there were no waters in the world as good as the waters of Megiddo. They saw one hundred thousand troop commanders, and each one had 40,000 soldiers—altogether 4 billion men—coming against Devorah and Yael. Yet, with a single breath of her mouth, Devorah made them all flee. And to Barak, who hesitated, she said, "However, there will be no glory for you on the journey." Regarding this it is said, "Why, Hashem, do You make us stray from Your ways and harden our heart from fearing You? Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage. We have become like those over whom You have never ruled, like those who are not called by Your name. Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at Your presence. As when fire kindles brushwood, and fire causes water to boil—to make Your name known to Your adversaries, so that nations might tremble at Your presence! When You did awesome things that we did not expect, You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence. From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides You. Pass through, pass through the gates, clear the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up a banner over the peoples. Behold, Hashem has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your salvation comes; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him. I trod down peoples in My anger, I made them drunk in My wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth."
