The Lesson of the Gaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland — Last Night, Sunday of Chol HaMoed Pesach

A lesson delivered on the second night— the night of the 17th of Nissan, Sunday of Chol HaMoed Pesach, after Ma’ariv

The 17th of Nissan—the day Haman was hanged:

So according to Rashi, they fasted on the 14th, 15th, and 16th; today is the 16th—meaning the night of the 17th—tonight is the night of the 17th. And they hanged him on the night of the 17th—they hanged the greatest Tzaddik in the world on the night of the 17th. All the little children did not go to sleep that night; they said, “We want to see them hang Mordechai.” Suddenly they saw a turban with two earrings. So they did not understand—what happened here? Why is Mordechai suddenly wearing a turban with two earrings? He also had a ring in his nose. Everyone became confused; they began to cry that they had hanged Haman the Tzaddik. Everyone cried and cried and cried and cried and cried and cried. And after that, they hanged him once more on Purim—they took him out of the grave and hanged him a second time. He merited twice; he merited a double portion. A Tzaddik always merits a double portion. So they hanged Haman both on the night of the 17th and also on Purim, which was the night of the 15th—twice they hanged him.

Pharaoh did teshuvah and became king in Nineveh:

And Pharaoh—who was also a Tzaddik—so it is written “Come to Pharaoh” three times: once with the plague of frogs (Shemos 7:26), once with the plague of pestilence (ibid. 9:1), and once with the plague of locusts (ibid. 10:4). For “Come to Pharaoh” means that Hashem is telling Moshe: Pharaoh will do teshuvah—you will see. The only one in all of Egypt who did teshuvah was Pharaoh. And he became king in Nineveh, because whoever does teshuvah becomes king in Nineveh. So Pharaoh merited to be king in Nineveh, because he did teshuvah. And for forty years the people of Nineveh did teshuvah, after Yonah rebuked them for forty years. After forty years, they all returned to their corruption, and they were swallowed up into the earth (Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer 43:8).
