The Yahrzeit of the Holy Tzaddik Rabbi David u’Moshe of Morocco • A Prayer for the Day of the Hillula from the Gaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Today is the hillula of the holy Tzaddik, the worker of salvations, Rabbi David u’Moshe zy"a, who is buried in the town of Agouim in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Here are a few lines about his life, and a prayer to say on the day of his yahrzeit:

Rabbi David u’Moshe was born and raised in the Holy City of Jerusalem. He was sent as a shadar (emissary) from Eretz Yisrael to Morocco in order to collect funds for the poor of Eretz Yisrael. According to tradition, even during his lifetime he was known as a Tzaddik who brought salvations for the Jews of Morocco, and he gave over his very life for the healing of Morocco’s Jews. He passed away on 1 Cheshvan in the year 4481 from Creation.

During his visit to Morocco in the year 5774 (2014), The Rav Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a visited his grave several times, and even on the day of the hillula he stayed near his holy resting place. The Rav shlit"a spoke many times about his greatness and his extraordinary righteousness.

Presented here is a prayer that The Rav Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a wrote to be said on the day of his hillula:

To merit being included within Rabbi David u’Moshe, who saved the entire People of Israel from the harsh decrees and almost brought the Geulah; and in this month the Kohen Gadol will don the Choshen to atone for the Children of Israel A Prayer for the Hillula of Rabbi David u’Moshe

Master of the World, Almighty—by the merit of David u’Moshe, who merited reaching the level of the Rambam, and who saved the People of Israel from all the harsh decrees, and who merited to almost bring the complete Geulah; and Rabbi David u’Moshe merited to draw the Geulah near. And his yahrzeit is Rosh Chodesh—joyful “ron,” for it is the secret of Mar-Cheshvan, the eighth month, when the complete Geulah must come, and the Beis HaMikdash of fire must descend, as it is written in Yalkut Shimoni: that in the month of Cheshvan, which is the eighth month—called Mar-Cheshvan, the eighth month—in it the First Beis HaMikdash was completed. Yet King Shlomo waited with the dedication of the Beis HaMikdash for eleven months, until Yerach HaEitanim, which is the first month of the new year—for according to Rabbi Eliezer, Avraham and Yaakov were born and passed away then—and therefore it is the month most suited for the dedication of the Beis HaMikdash, even though he completed its building in Yerach Shvan, Yerach Bul, the month in which the Flood descended. And until Shlomo built the Beis HaMikdash in Yerach Bul, the rain would flood the entire face of the earth every month of Cheshvan. This is the eighth month—joyful “ron,” “Choshen mor”—for then, in the eighth month, which is the month of Yerach Shvan, the Kohen Gadol will begin anew to wear the Choshen HaMishpat with the twelve precious stones, and to perform his service again, to atone for the Children of Israel, and for the entire world. And through this, to truly bring the complete Geulah in the blink of an eye—Amen, forever and ever.
