These are the Journeys of the Children of Israel - By the Hand of Moshe • Shabbat Matot-Masei in the Shadow of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Also on this Shabbat of Parshat Matot-Masei Chazak - Blessing the month of Menachem-Av 5784, we merited an uplifting Shabbat in the shadow of our teacher, the Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a. Before you is the full coverage of the prayers, lessons, and meals in the holy shadow:

On Friday afternoon, the Rav went out for the Mincha prayer (afternoon service) about forty minutes before sunset at 19:02 and began singing 'Or Zarua' (Light is sown for the righteous) for twelve minutes. After the singing, they stood for the Mincha prayer. At the conclusion of the Mincha prayer, he recited the order of the 'Hiskasherus' (spiritual connection) - 'I give thanks before You that You have set my portion...' 'I hereby hand over' 'I hereby connect' - our teacher the Rav shlit"a says it word by word and everyone repeats after him. Afterward, the Rav began Kabbalat Shabbat (the service welcoming the Sabbath) with 'Lechu Neranena' (Come let us sing), psalm after psalm with vitality and with all the fire, life, and bre'n (burning enthusiasm). He then began the singing of 'Lecha Dodi' (Come my beloved) with a pleasant melody and special length, lasting about fifty-two minutes, repeating all the sections again and again with immense vitality. After the conclusion of 'Lecha Dodi,' the Rav continued the prayer in its order, the Maariv (evening) prayer with all the melodies in the Shuvu Banim style at the peak of vitality and joy. Afterward, the Rav shlit"a concluded the prayer with the singing of 'Adon Olam' and 'Yigdal Elokim Chai.' Then, the traditional Shabbat songs were added which the Rav shlit"a is accustomed to saying together with the public - 'Shalom Aleichem,' 'Ribon Kol HaOlamim,' and 'Eshet Chayil.' He entered his holy home at 21:35 after a Friday night prayer service that lasted two hours and thirty-three minutes of prayer..

On Shabbat morning, the Rav shlit"a entered for prayer at 04:47, about an hour before Netz HaChama (sunrise). Our teacher the Rav shlit"a immediately said the Birchos HaTorah (blessings over the Torah) and then began the Shacharit (morning) prayer in its order, starting from Tikkun Chatzos (the midnight lament) - Tikkun Leah, followed by the morning songs. During the morning songs, the Rav shlit"a wrapped himself in his Tallit (prayer shawl). Then came the Korbanot (sacrificial readings). On this Shabbat, a special event occurred: at 05:34 they finished Korbanot, and the Rav shlit"a entered his home for a long break of an hour and a half (!). The followers, who began to fear that perhaps the Rav shlit"a was not feeling well, began to recite the Tikkun HaKlali (The General Rectification). They managed to say five Tikkun HaKlalis, and at 07:00, the Rav shlit"a appeared on the new stage. He immediately began Pesukei D'Zimra (verses of praise) with melodies and great vitality. It should be noted that the Rav shlit"a was moving like flames of holy fire in a very special way this Shabbat. It was a vitality unique in its kind, to the point that it is impossible to describe these awesome intensities or put them into writing.

The Shemoneh Esrei (the silent standing prayer) of Shacharit was reached only at 08:00. After the conclusion of the Chazarat HaShatz (the cantor's repetition), the Rav delivered a short lesson and began the reading of the Torah for Parshat Matot-Masei. It should be noted that when these portions are joined, it is the longest reading of the year with two hundred and forty-four verses. In addition to those celebrating special occasions and those observing a yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing), as is his custom, the Rav shlit"a called up additional guests and invitees on his own. The Torah reading lasted a full hour. The Haftarah (prophetic reading) was read by the son of Rabbi Nachman Hajbi.

Immediately after the Haftarah, the Rav sang 'Zera Chaya V'Kayama' (living and enduring offspring) for about five minutes. Afterward, the Rav performed the Birkat HaChodesh (blessing of the new month), with the 'Yechadeshu' melody familiar to us from the third meal. He then sang 'Ki Lekach Tov' and they returned the Torah scroll to the Ark. Then the Rav shlit"a stood for the Musaf prayer. After the conclusion of the Chazarat HaShatz of Musaf, the Rav delivered a lesson of about seven minutes speaking from the Torah brought in Likutey Halachot (the teachings of Reb Noson of Breslov) regarding 'Matana 5, the Camp of the Prophetess,' and also spoke about the topic of mustard and bees. Afterward, the Rav continued with 'Aleinu Leshabeach,' finished the prayer until the end of 'Anim Zemirot,' and even recited the Tikkun HaKlali. At the conclusion, our teacher the Rav shlit"a made Kiddush (sanctification) over the cup and delivered a lesson for about four minutes in which he spoke about Rashi's calculations in Samuel II, chapter 24 - as it is currently his Hiloula (anniversary of passing) - "like them and like them a hundred times." After the lesson, the Rav shlit"a said Kaddish and then began to deliver another lesson about Rabbi Weiss, who in the merit of saying "long life" on the gallows while wearing Tefillin in front of the Nazi beast, merited to be saved and to establish generations in Israel. Only at 10:20 did our teacher the Rav shlit"a enter his holy home after nearly four hours and ten minutes of the Shacharit prayer, Torah reading, Musaf, Kiddusha Rabba, and the lesson we merited. And this is besides the hour-and-a-half break during which the public stood and waited for our teacher the Rav shlit"a; if we add that, we are talking about five hours and forty minutes of the Shabbat morning prayer.

At 19:19, our teacher the Rav shlit"a entered for the Mincha prayer of the holy Shabbat on the balcony of his home, starting with Kaddish, and began saying 'Brich Shmeih' and singing 'Yehei Ra'ava' (May it be the Will) for five minutes. Afterward, he read from the Torah - Parshat Devarim - for three people called to the Torah. Immediately after, the Shemoneh Esrei prayer was recited, and at the conclusion of the Shabbat Mincha prayer which lasted about twenty minutes, while in his place on the balcony, the Rav shlit"a washed his hands for Seudah Shlishit (the third meal) at the minute of sunset. As is his holy custom, he began with the first kezayit (olive-sized portion of bread) and started the Seudah Shlishit songs for about twenty minutes. After them, he sang 'Yah Ribon' (G-d, Master of the world) for thirty-three minutes, with the Rav shlit"a repeating all the stanzas again and again. Afterward, he continued with the singing of 'Thus says Hashem, he found grace in the desert' for about six minutes, then moved to the singing of 'Thus says Hashem, I remember for you the kindness of your youth' for another eleven minutes. After that, 'Until now Your mercies have helped us' for about a quarter of an hour. After finishing the melodies, the Rav shlit"a began the 'Yechadeshu' melody, which is customary to sing in Breslov on Shabbat Mevarchim (the Shabbat when the new month is blessed). At the end of the melody, the Rav began 'Tzur Mishelo Achalnu' and led the Zimun (formal invitation to grace after meals) over the cup.

At 21:05, the Rav shlit"a began the singing of 'Lamnatzeach BiNginot' for about five minutes. Afterward, he continued with the Maariv prayer of the conclusion of Shabbat with melodies like a flaming fire. During the saying of 'Vayehi Noam,' our teacher the Rav shlit"a lengthened the singing of 'Blessed is He, our G-d, Who created us for His glory' for twelve minutes, and also the following song 'He will open [our hearts]' which the Rav continued to sing for about two minutes.

Only after nearly an hour of lengthening the aforementioned singing, the Rav performed Havdalah (the separation ceremony) with the singing of 'For the Jews there was light...' for about a minute. After Havdalah, the Rav washed his hands for Melaveh Malkah (the post-Shabbat meal) - this is the meal of David the King, the Mashiach. Our teacher the Rav shlit"a sang all the songs with special vitality and pleasantness. Before the song 'Eliyahu HaNavi,' he delivered a lesson for three minutes. Afterward, he continued the songs until the end, and at the conclusion, he led the Zimun over the cup and entered his holy home at 22:22 after a duration of three hours that we merited to be together with him continuously from the Mincha prayer until the end of Melaveh Malkah. In total, for the entire Shabbat, we merited about nine hours and forty minutes in the holy shadow on the holy Shabbat of 28 Tammuz, Matot-Masei - Chazak - Blessing the month of Menachem-Av - 5784.
