When Is the Time to Learn Double? • A Letter from the Holy Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a to Yeshivah Students for Bein HaZmanim

In honor of the days of Bein HaZmanim, the holy Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a wrote a letter of encouragement to the precious bochurim, to strengthen themselves to learn more during Bein HaZmanim, as the Chazon Ish brings. In addition, Rabbi Berland shlit"a blesses the bochurim in his letter that during Bein HaZmanim they should merit to complete their learning in all the hidden treasures of the holy Torah. Before you is the full letter, as it was written by the holy Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a this past week:

A WORD OF STRENGTHENING FOR ALL THE BOCHURIM FOR BEIN HAZMANIM, FROM ALL THE YESHIVOS AND FROM ALL THE MECHINOS—PEACE AND BLESSING!!

The Chazon Ish said that during Bein HaZmanim it is possible to learn twice as much as during a regular time, because then there is no pressure and no mashgiach who scolds and constricts the bochur. The bochurim are free to learn according to the desire of their souls—complete tractates, together with all the commentaries commonly learned in the Lithuanian yeshivos. In Lithuania, the practice was that during Bein HaZmanim they would learn all of the Rambam’s Eight Chapters with iyun and with deep pilpul, for there are found all the foundations of Judaism and Emunah, and the foundations of Torah study.

Therefore, we bless all the bochurim from all the yeshivos, that they should live and be well, that during Bein HaZmanim they will be able to complete all of the Rambam’s Eight Chapters, and all the smaller tractates—such as Avos d’Rabbi Nosson, Horayos, Kerisos, Me’ilah, Middos, and all the other Mishnayos that one does not merit to learn during the regular zman. Now, during Bein HaZmanim, it is possible to learn with full iyun, depth, and breadth—by heart, straight and reversed—all the tractates that are not learned during the regular learning schedule. Now each and every one is free to dedicate all his time and willpower to complete everything he did not manage to complete during the regular zman. Through this, they will all merit to become like the Chazon Ish and Rav Shach—and above us all, that gaon of the last generation, the great Rav, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky zt"l.

With the blessing of Torah

and with great love,

Eliezer Berland
