On Thursday night of last week, the night of 28 Iyar, the Tena’im celebration for the great-granddaughter of The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, took place in his holy residence. She is the daughter of his grandson, R’ Nachman Zucker shlit"a, with the family of the chassidic Rav R’ Nachman Goldshmidt shlit"a, one of the distinguished members of our community in the city of Beit Shemesh.
For the Tena’im celebration, The Rav shlit"a entered his home dressed in Shabbos clothing, and immediately began writing the tena’im. After that came the kinyan with the gartel, and then The Rav shlit"a was honored with reading the tena’im—after which the plate was broken in the women’s section, for a mazal tov.
The Rav shlit"a delivered a Torah lesson at the engagement celebration. Below are excerpts from the words of Torah that The Rav shlit"a shared: The Rav spoke about Dan, who is the tallest of all the tribes because he gathers in all the camps—he strengthened and built yeshivos for all who are downtrodden and broken. After that, he spoke about the sin of the Golden Calf, which was not forgiven, because they should have waged a “brothers’ war” before the Calf and not after—so that they would not make a Calf. And similarly in Nov, that sin too is not forgiven; there as well, the Jewish people should have risen up, for it cannot be that babies and children and innocent Kohanim are murdered in such a way. After that, he spoke about rising early in the morning, and said about Shlomo that the daughter of Pharaoh performed sorcery on him and he woke up late, and his mother said to him, “What, my son, and what, son of my womb”—I wanted you to be G-d-fearing, and not like all the kings who drink and wake up late. From there he moved on to speak about Rechavam, who said, “My father disciplined you with whips, and I with scorpions.” After that, he spoke about the miracles that were done for David and Avishai ben Tzeruyah—that David flew in the air and almost landed on the sword that Yishbi had prepared for him, and Avishai said the Explicit Name of Hashem, as brought in the Prophets. The Rav asked: Why didn’t David himself say the Explicit Name of Hashem? And he answered that David’s mochin were “sealed shut” at that moment—like the Baal Shem Tov, as brought in the story of the journey to Eretz Yisrael. The Rav shlit"a concluded the lesson by saying that the chassan needs to learn all the Midrashim, and after the wedding they must sit and learn. After the lesson, the Rav began singing “Od Yishama” and “Samei’ach Tesamach” for about twenty minutes, and in the middle The Rav shlit"a got up to dance himself together with the families of the mechutanim and the chassan, may he live.
From here we send to The Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, a blessing of mazal tov on the occasion of the engagement of his great-granddaughter, at the proper time and with a good mazal. May it be Hashem’s will that he merit to see abundant nachas from all his descendants, with physical health and radiant light, Amen, may it be so!
