With great grief and sorrow the world was informed of the passing of Maran, Prince of the Torah, Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l.
The strong connection between our Rebbe, Rav Eliezer Berland shlit”a and his family with the Kanievsky family in general and Rav Chaim himself is well known. The Berland family purchased the apartment of the Steipler (Rav Chaim’s father, Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky zt”l), and they were neighbors over the course of twenty years, as the Rav relates below in his eulogy.
“We were neighbors for twenty years, doors across from one another. I would see him every day several times, pray with him at Lederman together. This was our regular synagogue over the course of twenty years. My children, from the day they were born, all of them prayed at Lederman together with Rav Chaim. All of them merited to see him every day.
“Really this was something of the likes of which hasn’t been for hundreds of years, such a revelation of G-dliness that is revealed within flesh and blood. This is something which it’s impossible to contain or understand. It’s impossible to measure it with any measure in the world, to live in proximity to the giant amongst giants, ‘the great man who is a giant amongst giants,’ to live for twenty years beside him every day.
“When the Rabbanit [Berland] would teach until four in the afternoon, and the girls would return from school and there was no food in the empty refrigerator, from the age of six to fifteen they would regularly go up to Bat Sheva [Rabbanit Kanievsky a”h], [and] she would feed them. This was every day from the age of six until the age of fifteen. All my daughters would eat by Bat Sheva. She would come down and prepare food for them.
“We were close to each other like family mamash, more than family, and Bat Sheva mamash was a mother to my daughters. She would take care of them and nourish them, because from eight in the morning already until four in the afternoon, the Rabbanit wasn’t home. [Rabbanit Kanievsky] took care of sustaining them and took care of everything. If not for Bat Sheva, who knows how they could have grown up. Then this was material help which was totally spiritual, because Bat Sheva and Rav Chaim were an aspect of the cherubs of the Ark of the Covenant! In every generation, there is a couple who are the cherubs of the Ark of the Covenant. In our generation this was Rav Chaim and Bat Sheva. They were the cherubs whose ‘faces are man [facing] his brother.’
“So we know the situation of the generation, that Hashem forgives all iniquities, because the death of Miriam is next to the Red Heifer [in the Torah], because the death of the Tzaddik atones more than the Red Heifer.
“The death of Tzaddikim is twice as hard as the destruction of the Holy Temple.
“This day is a terrible and awful day. It’s totally impossible to bear it, the terrible tragedy. This is the most terrible day that could be; it’s impossible to describe at all. We didn’t dream that there would be such a thing. We were sure that Rav Chaim would live until 120 with us together and would continue to lead and guide us with his light and counsel. The very fact that he is alive here in this world draws the G-dly light, the holy Shechinah [Divine presence]. Because the Tzaddik is the Shechinah and his wife is the help to the Shechinah; she is the Sefirah [Divine emanation] of Malchut [Kingship] of the Shechinah.
“Rav Chaim and Bat Sheva, both of them together, with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, continue to illuminate the Jewish people, they continue to shine! It’s forbidden to think that the soul departs. It’s written in ‘Gesher HaChaim’ that the greatest sin is to think that the soul departs. This is the greatest iniquity of all iniquities. The soul doesn’t depart; it remains with us! As it’s written in the Gemara Shabbat 152, that Rabbi Yehudah went to comfort someone who didn’t have family. So he brought him ten people, and after the Shiva, he came [the dead person in a dream] and said, ‘I was there!’
“As Rav says, ‘Deliver a moving eulogy, because I will be standing there’ (Shabbat 153a). ‘Deliver a moving eulogy!’ – however much we eulogize it’s only a thorn in the sea. It’s not even a drop from millions and myriads of kindnesses and good that Rabbi Chaim did with us through the essence of his being amongst us, through the essence of the Divine light which he would draw onto us, because all the Torah of the generation – boys and girls, all the strengthening was in his merit. Everything is his merit.
“Just to see him for one second, it would be possible to learn Torah all 120 years continuously without distraction, without taking the head out of the book. This was the lesson that we learned from Rabbi Chaim, because I followed after him for twenty years — in his life, he never took his head out of the book! Whether walking to Kollel Chazon Ish, whether… she would run, run after him; I remember to this day. He wouldn’t look at all if she was walking with him or not. On the way with the children to kindergarten, he would only hold the book! His face only in the book. With difficulty he knew the streets, how to reach Kollel Chazon Ish! So I followed after him for twenty years every day. Such an exceptional figure already won’t be until our righteous Mashiach comes! He is the letters of Mashiach [the initial letters of Maran Shemaryahu Yosef Chaim, his name, are the letters of ‘Mashiach’].
“He was the Mashiach of the generation without any doubt! If we were worthy, he would have been revealed, we would have seen his revelation. As the Chatam Sofer says in Siman 98, Choshen Mishpat in Likutim, that Mashiach is found in every generation. There is no generation without Mashiach. Only that we don’t have the merit. We don’t have the merit that King Mashiach will be revealed to us. But he was King Mashiach of this generation without any doubt. He was really Mashiach, and that he departed suddenly is [because of] the sins of the generation; this atones for the generation.
“Because really there was a decree of extermination on the entire Jewish people and he now sweetened this decree.
“Because in every generation there are decrees of extermination. Therefore, Mordechai couldn’t devote himself to learning, because then there were terrible decrees of extermination, ‘to exterminate, kill, destroy all the Jews.’ Therefore, he ‘found favor with the multitude of his brethren,’ because they didn’t understand that he was obligated to fight the decrees of extermination. However, the moment that [the decrees] stopped, he ascended to the Land of Israel and returned to his learning, after the [time of] the Megilah. This was Rabbi Chaim, who sweetened all the decrees.
“All that we’re living here in the Holy Land already for 94 years, we are living here without enemy or destroyer. No enemy succeeds. There are endless enemies and only the merit of Rabbi Chaim stands for us, and it will stand for us for our generation and for all the coming generations until our righteous Mashiach comes, speedily in our days, Amen.”
Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky ZT”L – Éloge de Rav Eliezer Berland Shlit”a

La grande connexion entre notre Rebbe, Rav Eliezer Berland shlit”a et sa famille avec la famille Kanievsky en général et Rav Chaim lui-même est bien connue. La famille Berland acheta l’appartement du Steipler (père de Rav Chaim, Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky zt”l), et ils étaient voisins pendant vingt années, comme le Rav le relate ci-dessous dans son éloge.
“Nous étions voisins pendant vingt années, les portes l’une en face de l’autre. Je le voyais chaque jour plusieurs fois, priait avec lui ensemble chez Lederman. C’était notre synagogue quotidienne au cours des vingt années. Mes enfants, depuis le jour qu’ils sont nés, eux tous priaient ensemble chez Lederman avec Rav Chaim. Eux tous méritèrent de le voir chaque jour.
“Vraiment c’était quelque chose qui n’a pas été depuis des centaines d’années, une telle révélation de sainteté qui fut révélée à l’intérieur de chair et de sang. C’est quelque chose qui est impossible de maîtriser et de comprendre. C’est impossible de le mesurer avec aucune mesure dans le monde, de vivre à proximité du géant parmi les géants, ‘le grand homme qui est un géant parmi les géants’ de vivre pendant vingt années à ses côtés.
“Quand la Rabbanite [Berland] enseignait jusqu’à quatre heures de l’après-midi, et les filles retoournaient de l’école et qu’il n’y avait pas de nourriture dans le réfrigérateur vide, de l’âge de six à quinze elles montaient régulièrement chez Bat Sheva [Rabbanite Kanievsky a”h], [et] elle les nourrissait. Ce fût chaque jour de six à quinze ans. Toutes mes filles mangeaient chez Bat Sheva. Elle descendait et préparait de la nourriture pour elles.
“Nous étions proche de chacun comme une famille mamash, plus qu’une famille, et Bat Sheva mamash était une mère pour mes filles. Elle prenait soin d’elles et les nourrissait, parce que de huit heures du matin déjà jusqu’à quatre heure de l’après-midi, la Rabbanite n’était pas à la maison. [Rabbanite Kanievsky] prenait soin de les soutenir et prendre en charge chaque chose. Si non pour Bat Sheva, qui sait comment elles auraient grandi. Ensuite ce fût de l’aide matérielle, car Bat Sheva et Rav Chaim étaient un aspect des Chérubins de l’Arche d’Alliance! Dans chaque génération, il y’a un couple qui sont les Chérubins de l’Arche d’Alliance. Dans notre génération, ce fût Rav Chaim et Bat Sheva. Ils étaient les Chérubins dont ‘les visages sont celui d’un homme faisant face à son frère.’
“Donc nous connaissons la situation de la générération, que Hashem pardonne toutes les iniquités, car la mort de Miriam est à côté de la Vache Rousse [dans la Torah], parce que la mort du Tzaddik expie plus que la Vache Rousse.
“La mort des Tzaddikim est deux fois plus dure que la destruction du Saint Temple.”
“Ce jour est un jour terrible et affreux. C’est totalement impossible de le supporter, la terrible tragédie. C’est le plus jour le plus terrible qui puisse être; c’est impossible de le décrire du tout. Nous n’avons pas rêvé qu’il y’aurait une telle chose. Nous étions sûr que Rav Chaim vivrait jusqu’à 120 ans avec nous ensemble et continuerait à nous diriger et guider avec sa lumière et conseil. Le fait même qu’il est vivant ici dans ce monde fait descendre la sainte lumière, la sainte Shechinah [Divine Présence]. Parce que le Tzaddik est la Shechinah et sa femme est l’aide de la Shechinah; elle est la Sefirah [Divine émanation] de Malchut [Royauté] de la Shechinah.
“Rav Chaim et Bat Sheva, chacun d’eux ensemble, avec leurs enfants, petits-enfants et arrières petits-enfants, continuent d’illuminer le peuple Juif, ils continuent de briller! C’est interdit de penser que l’âme part. C’est écrit dans ‘Gesher HaChaim’ que le plus grand péché est de penser que l’âme s’en va. C’est la plus grande iniquité de toutes les iniquités. L’âme ne s’en va pas; elle reste avec nous! Comme c’est écrit dans la Guémara Shabbat 152, que Rabbi Yehudah allait réconforter quelqu’un qui n’avait pas de famille. Donc il a lui-même amenait dix personnes, et après les shiva, il vint [le défunt dans le rêve] et disait, ‘J’étais là!’
“Comme Rav dit, ‘Délivre une éloge matinale, car je me tiendrai là’ (Shabbat 153a). ‘Délivre une éloge émouvante!’ – toutefois plus nous faisons l’éloge c’est seulement une épine dans la mer. Ce n’est même pas une goutte de millions et myriades de bontés et biens que Rabbi Chaim a fait avec nous à travers l’essence de son être parmi nous, à travers l’essence de la lumière Divine dont il nous faisait descendre sur nous, car toute la Torah de la génération – garçons et filles, tout le réconfort était de son mérite. Chaque chose était de son mérite. Tout est son mérite.
“Juste de voir une seconde, ça serait possible d’apprendre la Torah pendant 120 années continuellement sans distraction, sans sortir sa tête du livre. Ce fût la leçon que nous avons apprise de Rabbi Chaim, car j’ai suivi après lui pendant vingt années — dans sa vie, il ne sortait pas sa tête du livre! Aussi bien que marcher au Kollel Chazon Ish, qu’… elle courrait, courrait après lui; Je me souviens de ce jour. Il ne regardait pas du tout si elle était était train de marcher à lui ou pas. Sur le chemin avec les enfants au jardin d’enfants il ne tenait seulement le livre! Son visage était seulement dans le livre. Avec difficulté il connaissait les rues, comment atteindre le Kollel Chazon Ish! Donc je le suivais pendant vingt ans chaque jour. Déjà une telle personnalité ne serait jusqu’à notre vertueux Mashiach vienne! Il est les lettres de Mashiach [les lettres initiales de Maran Shemaryahu Yosef Chaim, son nom, sont les lettres de ‘Mashiach’].
“Il était le Mashiach de la génération sans aucun doute! Si nous étions méritant, il aurait été révélé, nous aurions vu sa révélation. Comme le Chatam Sofer dans le Siman 98, de Choshen Mishpat du Likoutim, que Mashiach est trouvé dans chaque génération. Il n’y a pas de génération sans Mashiach. Seulement que nous n’avons pas le mérite. Nous n’avons pas le mérite que le Roi Mashiach se serait révélé à nous. Mais il était le Roi Mashiach de cette génération sans aucun doute. Il était vraiment Mashiach, il est parti soudainement, c’est [à cause] des péchés de la génération; ceci expie pour la génération .
“Car réellement il y avait un décret d’extermination sur le peuple Juif entier et il a maintenant adouci ce décret.
“Car dans chaque génération il y a des décrets d’extermination. Par conséquent, Mordechai ne pouvais pas se consacrer à l’étude, car ensuite il y avait de terribles décrets d’extermination, ‘pour exterminer, tuer, détruire tous les Juifs.’ Donc, il ‘trouva faveur avec la multitude de ses frères,’ car ils ne comprenaient pas qu’il fût obligé de se battre contre les décrets d’extermination. Toutefois, le moment que [les décrets] s’arrêtèrent, il monta à la terre d’Israël et retourna à son étude, après le [temps de] de la Meguilah. C’était Rabbi Chaim, qui adoucit tous les décrets.
“Tout ce qui sont en train de vivre ici dans la Sainte Terre déjà pour 94 années, nous sommes en train de vivre sans ennemi ni destructeur. Aucun ennemi réussit. Il y a une infinie d’ennemis et seulement le mérite de Rabbi Chaim se maintient pour nous, et ils se tiendra pour nous pour notre génération et pour toutes les générations à venir jusqu’à ce que notre vertueux Mashiach arrive, rapidement de nos jours, Amen.”
