Yesterday was the twelfth anniversary of the murder of the Baba Elazar, the Tzaddik Rabbi Elazar Abuhatzeira, son of the Baba Meir and grandson of the Baba Sali zy”a.
The Baba Elazar was born on 4 Av in the year 5708 (1948 l”m) in Morocco to his father Rabbi Meir Abuhatzeira. In 5726 (1966), he ascended with his family to the land of Israel. He eventually settled in Beer Sheva and was known for his awesome holiness and ascetism, with few exceptions not leaving his home, and walking to the synagogue by way of a tunnel.
On 27 Tammuz 5771, when receiving visitors, an emotionally-disturbed man entered his house and stabbed him to death. Baba Elazar was buried on the Mount of Olives.
On the first Hilulah, 27 Tammuz 5772 (12 years ago), unexpectedly and for the first time in some twenty years, Rav Berland shlit”a came to the Mount of Olives to the grave of the Baba Elazar. The Rav said the Tikkun HaKlali and Kabalat Ol Malchut Shamayim, followed by a short shiur and Kaddish. In the shiur, the Rav said that the Baba Elazar was Mashiach ben Yosef, but in our many sins, he was taken from us.
